Just found a link on speedtest.net that i hadnt seen before www.pingtest.net

Just did a test from home (bigtime) and i got:

Did this at work through telstraclear dsl and got:

I use the same router at home we use at work and we both synch at about the same rate (~19mbit) i live and work in blenheim by the way.. Im wondering how the hell i get 100% packet loss? its rather odd, i did this test several times, turning off my firewall, restarting the router etc etc, im leaning towards bigtime being the problem. would like to see some others post results

Test done multiple times, and the speedtest ping is always higher.

Both are likely to be unreliable given they use flash, can/will be affected by client side performance.

pingtest

Has anyone tried WinMTR?
http://winmtr.sf.net/

Ive found it keeps coming up with a raw socket connection error in xp sp3 while running it
with admin rights.

Would anyone recommend a better alternative

thanks

Could do with a Wellington or Auckland server. (And an Aussie one, for that matter :/)

Pingtest result

I wonder why they dont just integrate these functions into the speedtest site?

Blenheim is my hometown. Your packet loss is explainable due to most things in Blenheim being middle aged and boring - including IP data packets :-P

How is B-town anyways? I used to live (well, 'be constantly hungover and unwashed' anyway) on someones couch which used to be right where you stand in line at McDonalds (before it was built obviously). They kicked us out to build it :o(

Ive tried the test several times since my first post and im still getting the packet loss, between 90% and 100%.. grrrr.

Blenheim.. well whats there to say, your a fool if you ever stop here for longer than 5 minutes on your way to or from the ferry, this town sucks you in and you will never leave! Im guessing its probably much the same town it was when you were here, although i wasnt around when mc'ds was errected (been here 5 years), its still lacking any entertainment at all that dosnt revolve around a bottle of wine or a 12 pack, but that maybe my biased opinion :). Still the backwaters of Nz as far as technology goes, as my packetloss indicates..

i hope they paid your mate well to steal his prime location.

garvani: personal message your IP Address and I can see why you might be getting this (on the Auckland Server) (go to http://www.whatismyip.com to see your ip address)

Thanks

Strange.. do yo uget the same on all other other pingtest sites (such as The Tauranga one and the USA ones etc)
Are you running any firewalls etc which could be upsetting the page?

Thanks

yeah all sites ive tested i get 90~100% packet loss.
Running x64 windows7, have bitdefender internet security, but have disabled the firewall when doing tests and still have the same issues, have a 3com officeconnect router, but we have one of those here at work too and it dosnt happen here so its not that..

To be honest it dosnt bother me, i wouldnt have knowen there was a problem with my connection if i hadnt of found that test, im not playing online games at present, if its going to interfere with that then we might have a problem when NS2 is released.

there's a difference in an application reporting packet loss and there being actual packet loss. I bet if you do a continuous ping test to the same test side you'll drop no packets.

also just because you have the same router at home as you do at work doesn't mean that its been configured the same ;)

as for the question about an alternative to winmtr, try pingplotter, slightly more modern version. Still they use a certain type of icmp packet that will be de-prioritised by many routers so you can't fully believe all its results.

if you notice say 20 % pk loss on hop #5 and then only 5% pk loss on a later hop then you know that some router is de-prioritising icmp packets.
