Hi guys,

I have one of the Thomson TG585 routers which Telecom is giving out to new customers. But I want to use it with another provider. It seems to be locked down - I can connect to the router via telnet, but not to the http web interface (I haven't used the Telecom install CD which comes with the router - it screws around with my network settings which I need kept for work). Any ideas on how I can update my username/password? Or will it be necessary to flash the firmware? If so - do you know where I can find the right firmware for NZ?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

You can change these settings via the user.ini file. However it's possible to brick these routers if you don't know what you're doing, I've managed it before.

Why the switch anyway?

it shouldnt be locked.
the gateway is http://192.168.1.254/
the default username is Administrator and no password - so it shouldnt ask you for any login

I'm only switching because I've moved in my girlfriend, she already has an account with another provider and doesn't see the point of switching (she is currently on a 5GB plan, the Telecom plan with a similar price is only 3GB). She's using some ancient DLink at the moment.

Personally I prefer Telecom (I've been a Xtra/Telecom ADSL customer since 2002, never had any problems or complaints), but will just stick with what she has for the time being. If we move again I'll make sure we go back to Telecom. =)

Anyway, back to the topic. Should I be looking at doing something like "ppp ifconfig user"? Is there anything else which needs to be changed apart from the username and password? Can you think of any reason I can't access the web interface without using the Telecom setup CD?

If I brick it, I'll have a very fancy bookend. =)

Don't worry guys, I've got it working. Still can't connect to the web interface using my work laptop (restrictive network settings), but managed to connect using my girlfriend's Mac. Seriously, they should make those things with more than one mouse button.

I was anticipating this being a mission, as I know these routers have been locked up overseas (US & UK) but it wasn't at all. Thanks again for all your help!

Can anyone, point me in the right direction for changing the INI file? I know how to get it and edit it just not entirely sure what I need to change. Has anyone out there unlocked this router for Woosh in particular?
