I've currently moved into a new flat. The flatmates there are currently with telecom for their broadband on a 3gig plan. They don't want to get a larger plan because they don't really use that much data.

I go through a bit more though and also use my broadband to games on xbox live. Because of the existing broadband connection through the phoneline I;m assuming I can't get another connection through the same line. I've looked into woosh but they don't service my area (Palmerston North). I've had a quick look at some of the other wireless isps but most require hardware to be installed for a significant cost that I just can't afford.

Does anybody have any ideas to help me out?

Move to a new flat or offer to pay more towards the broadband

Why don't you offer to pay the full difference between the 3 gb plan and a higher limit plan or the overage charges between 3 gb and what you use?

This will definitely be the cheapest way to get the data you need.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Sorry I meant to post that was obviously my first option - however my previous experiences with telecom I was looking for alternative options. I do realise that paying the extra for the usage would be the cheapest, however I would be willing to pay more for good service. Any other options would be appreaciated.

I'm not going to get into a debate about that - I would prefer not to use telecom as my isp. end of story.

I'm looking for alternatives to this; if there is none, then I'll will make do with telecom. But before I resign to do that, I'd like to explore all my options.

I'm not a Telecom ADSL fan but in Palmerston North they will probably be the fastest and most reliable.

Best to just make up the difference between the 3gb and higher data plan.

There should be a second pair into the place that you can get another connection on.

But the only ISP that will tell you properly is telecom, since the others will want your money before they put the order thru IME...

Which ISP charged you before the RFS date has completed? I can understand you getting billed perhaps a month in advanced but not before the service is active.

Well if your going to be like that, then ..find a new flat.

Be like what? - state my preference of isp? All I am doing is exploring my options, as good consumers do, and will go with the best option. If the best option is to use telecom, then I will. But I would like to know what the other options are before making a decision.

If you are wanting to have your own internet connection you are going to have to put up the cash I'm afraid.

The more expensive option is to have a second phone line installed and put broadband on that. You would then have your own connection.

A cheaper alternative is to get naked DSL installed (internet without an attached phoneline).

Either way there will be setup costs, plus monthly fees, depends how dedicated you are to gaming I spose

I don't see why people have gripes with telecom now, they aren't what they used to be and are now known to be one of the better ISP's in terms of low latency for games and reliable speeds.
Why not just upgrade the plan and try it for a month? If it doesn't work out, downgrade it the next month and find another solution.

Your loss though, its your wallet.

Are you sure? I just haven't heard good things about telecom lately in relation to their speeds. And from previous experience I wasn't impressed either.

Look, all I am after is some ideas on what my options are. I know that upgrading their telecom contract is an option - I'm just exploring what my other options are.

As has already been said, Telecom really is your only/best/cheapest option.

From looking around here, most people are happy with Telecom and their speeds. 9/10 problems are not ISP related, but down to user related problems, or internal wiring issues.

The answer then would be to pay for another line to be connected to the house, or go with mobile broadband with Vodafone.

Here's my advice...

Don't even bother considering mobile broadband or wireless for gaming, general latency will be horrible and not worth the time/effort/money.

The house will almost certainly have a spare pair of wires into the place, most lines into houses have two pairs of wires, one pair being spare and unused for a 2nd line.

You should be able to get a landline + adsl setup (or naked adsl) on the "second line" with the ISP of your choice.

This would obviously be a lot more expensive in setup costs and per month than just paying for the next size up on the existing plan but you would be total control over your own connection, not shared with flatmates who might affect your gaming performance.
