Hey guys,

Just letting you know that we all just got back from a big Telecom Exchange tour with 5 of the moderators from Geekzone.

There are a bunch of pictures that have been taken which we can upload, as well as some video as well, showing the whole trip.

The following was the original invite that was sent out to some of the top posters and bloggers across NZ.

------------
Hey guys,

I am in the middle of organising a Geek Exchange Tour with Telecom Wholesale - an exchange, cabinet, cablepit etc and this is happening on the 19th from about 1pm onward.

We are not fussed if you are pro-Telecom or not, and our goal was that we can keep it frank and honest about exactly what and why Telecom are doing things, you will be welcome to bring camera's and or video and they are welcome to post honest feedback of what you thought of the trip.

At the conclusion of the trip, we have organised some Beer, Pizza and an informal catchup with the Broadband Product managers from Wholesale, where you can ask them the hard questions.

We had a very limited invite list, but managed half of those invited was from GZ,based on how it goes, we may consider doing it again later, covering different elements, or introducing to different teams (but no promises).

Here are some of the pics and vids:

P.S. My first post seemed to lock up on me, so there looks like some orphaned post..

I find the hardhats hilarious! Was there a risk of the exchange falling down? With all those cables, generators, and battery banks around, wouldn't a pair of thick rubber gloves be more appropriate safety attire?

I got a tour around the Airdale street building many many years ago...my father worked for Telecom at the time. Things have changed a lot since then :-p

The hard hats were because we went down into the cable pit at the exchange, and there was the potential to smack your head on the manhole or ladder.

Not sure why we kept them on after coming up from under the exchange Smile

You can see the Orcon kit next to the TelstraClear kit in the Access Seekers cage.

We have 6 MSANS in that exchange, which contain around 1000 ports DSL/POTS each.

Wazza geek - actually I noticed that when we were out at the Cabinet looking at the Whisper cabinets, you were actually one of only 2 others still wearing them....now I understand why.

Sounddude - What are the MSANS? Is that Siemens? (You don't have to reply of course).

I think when the local cabinet got upgraded, it was upgraded to a whisper cabinet. It looks like the one on the photos anyway. Lucky lot, beers and pizzas after!

Lucky buggers, is there any chance of similar tours being organised in other parts of the country?  May I suggest Christchurch next? Smile
