It's me again, the chap from Europe asking about ISPs.

One other thing I've noticed is that ISPs in NZ have a charge for static IP. I mention this not as a criticism of NZ but as a hopefully interesting observation as I've never come across this before. (Mods - please move to my other thread if needed).

In Europe I was used to just finding out my ISPs DNS then changing my settings to static ISP and hey presto (used it for port forwarding). Is there a valid justification for this charge i.e. what are the costs involved to the ISP?

Just a FYI, Orcon currently gives statics by default with no extra charge.

While static IP's are certainly the exception rather than the norm plenty of ISP's don't charge extra.

TelstraClear use static IP's on their cable network by default and static IP's are available on most Telecom Broadand plans (I believe Big Time may be the only plan that it isn't) - on most plans there is no extra charge.

Yep, I have had the IP address on TCL cable network for the last four years. Only changed because I moved houses - the previous one was the same for about seven years.

My understand was most ISPs do charge for static IPs for residential connections. Certainly my experience in having ihug (now Vodafone), Telecom, Xnet and TelstraClear all charge a small fee for a static IP.

PenultimateHop gives a good explanation of why the charge is justified.

I just looked at the Telecom site. On all business plans and Pro a static IP is included for free.

*most* dsl users don't need to have a static IP, typically ISPs will allow businesses to as they understand that many businesses run their own mail servers etc.

Some ISPs also have long lease times on their dynamic IPs so even a brief outage or modem re-sync will not force a new IP address to be assigned to a user, and if that isn't enough then $10 per month is pretty standard.

Luckily APNIC is pretty laxed with their policing as I know several ISPs who could easily get busted for not accounding honestly for their IP usage.

I think you're getting confused with WAN and LAN IPs. You don't need a static WAN IP to setup port forwarding

Same IP with Slingshot for ~16 months now - despite the modem being off for extended periods (2+ weeks) 3 or 4 times.
