Ok 1st thing; I've read the sticky above but I thought I'd still make a topic because I want some good discussion about it, not just facts.

Ok well I'm going into a 5 person flat. We need line rental + home phone + internet. I guess everyone will be pretty active on the internet so we'll need at least 20gb, probably more like 40gb.
Most of the calls will be local with a few exceptions every week.
If we could keep all of this with one ISP it will be probably better.

so the obvious answer is Telecom with Big Time broadband? I've heard Big Time is really slow during the day? Is it reliable. Speed will be halved at least during most time during the day (possibly 1/5 times if everyone is online at once).
Pros: Unlimited Data. No "Stop taking all the usage, man!"
Cons: Slow speed, unreliable connections?
So is Big time a good choice?

What else is there? Obviously Telecom Pro interet (40gb) that give you better speeds usually? Is that right?

Slightshot and Xnet have both have unlimited usage off-peak times. I've heard Xnet is really bad at the moment though. What about Slingshot?

The flat is in Wellington.

What do you guys think?

My Big Time connection is fine, at the moment (2 weeks have no limitations of any sort :)) http traffic was excellent from the time I connected 24/7... So I would advise you to go with BT and if it does not work for you - go more advanced plan.

I only find Big Time to be slow during the day for torrents and some online gaming (not most gaming, just some).

Otherwise I find the speed to be the same as my previous plan (which was Pro)

Based on experance in flats, I can recommened getting the service were you need to enter a PIN to make a toll call. Each flatmate has their own number.

When the bill arrives, you can then easily work out who made what call, and get them to pay for the toll calls they made.

I had a flat mate skip the country with a $1000 phone bill about 6 years ago. I didn't think you could make that many calls in a month...

What do Telecom call this feature?

Big time will be sweet, youtube etc works fine, I can watch my lecture recordings fine. The only thing is torrents during the day are slow alongside things like rapidshare.

I seriously advise against any plan where there are overage charges. Either BT or something thats slowed down, otherwise you may have to split the excess with them and that could be REALLY expensive...

But for what its worth, the non techie people in my house didn't realise we had changed plans at all (was on the 20GB plan with Telecom). And the speeds are fine for what I use. FPS gaming is a no-go though.

Well i have to wonder where you heard xnet is on the go slow lately. I have not had any issues with xnet going slow for a long long time. I also reckon for the price they are good. I spend only about $90pm on ndsl plan and consistantly use 50+gig a month.

Realistically if you want good speeds then Telstra is best for this but like a lot of ISP's these days you have long wait times for getting through to the Techs when you need them. (managed to get about a gig of data in about 20 mins last night) I have considered recently changing to Slingshot to take advantage of paying a extra $10 Pm getting 25gig of day time data and free offpeak however some of the other threads i read over last few days have made me wonder if it is worth it.

I was downloading various things fro the apple and microsoft websites and got up to 4 MB/s combined (32Mb/s) once!

But given the test is hosted by Citylink, and they do the hosting for the uni, I am not surprised. With 5 or 6 ms ping, should be quick. General browsing is painfully slow though.

Yeah all of the microsoft/apple stuff that has NZ servers must also be hosted by City link becuse those always get awesome speeds.
