Laughing Hi people my name is Bowan.

I have had a couple of issues with my broadband over a couple of days here is my story.

I have a line splitter installed no need for filters. I was with orcon on an adsl2+ platinum plan with interleaving turned off to get the best ping possible and I rarely ever got disconected from the net the only time that I got disconected was when the modem was restarting. I was rougly getting up/down 1.2mb/4.0mb with 4ms-10ms on aucklands server via speedtest.net this was awesome! Plus I was connected directly to the exchange it was far away but still okay. Then they cabinetised me. Now I  was running on adsl1 because orcon didn't have their hardware installed in that cabinet so that meant 800kb(adsl max)/8mb(adslmax) and 20-30ms and sometimes I got disconnected. I wanted the best of the best I wanted my adsl2+ back! So I went to telecom as they had their adsl2+ equipment in the cabinet now I get 828kb/15.2mb this is from my modem 52ms plus frequent disconnections. I understand the person who swapped me over on the phone put me on a GO plan instead of a PRO plan with the interleaving turned off hence maybe the high ms/ping. I have been with telecom so far for 3 days and I understand that they promised no change in my internet I should not get any disconections it should have been seemless so refund I shall receive. So guys what do you think?

Here is my modem info, Thomson TG585v7

I have called telecom they have come around replaced some wiring trying to find out if it's on my end but it's definetly not even I know that then they went away then gave me a call saying that they might need to change the port at the cabinet? I have no idea what that is. But every time I mention to them I am getting slow upload speeds and bad ping they just go but thats good upload speeds even your download speeds are great which isn't a big deal to me. I am a frequent online gamer and uploader I love to send photos to my girlfriend and upload them to photobucket and I am a very impatient person at times. Any help would do anything to get the best possible connection except! Replacing the whole line because I know my line is perfect even though it's got dino wiring as the telecom man said lol!

Kind Regards,

Bowan Anderton

Yep...sadly yours is a story repeated by nearly everyone I know. This country just can't seem to get it together when it comes to decent net access :\

hahaha damn. I agree with you on that. It's just hard to get things done and get it done your way and get it done perfectly. My net is decent for the telecom staff but definetly not for me! Okay off to work! Help me out guys!

Hi, the higher the noise margin the better things are, so 14dB down is good, not bad. You say you get frequent disconnections, is this your modem disconnecting or an issue with Orcons BRAS. If you note your modem has been up for 42minutes and reports no signal loss or dropped frames and just a hand full of FEC errors, so did you get a "disconnection" during that period?

What I am trying to establish is if this "disconnection" is a DSL one or a BRAS one.

Cyril

Edit, and 0,0dBm output power is a valid power 1mW infact which is quite normal for this attenuation.

When you changed to Telecom from another ISP (in your case Orcon) they temporarily put you on the Go plan first.  Then they change your plan to the correct one, it's just part of their process as far as I can tell.  You shouldn't be on the Go plan for long, just temporary setup while the migrate your line, setup your profile etc.

So you should definitely be on the Pro plan by now, I think you can login to your telecom and check the details of what plan you're on:  http://www.telecom.co.nz/yourtelecom

If you asked for interleaving off it should be off by now.

Try a ping to www.telecom.co.nz

Tt should be low ie: <16ms, if not ring the help desk and ask them to turn interleaving off for your account/line.  Also address the wrong plan issue with the helpdesk if you're not on the pro plan yet.

Yeah under 14db is great and my db is definetly low! I should be getting much better speeds. I am not with orcon anymore I am with telecom on their cabinet running adsl2+ . I was getting disconnections every minute. I know it's a telecom problem or even a modem problem I might buy a new one might...

Yes that is correct they did put me on a GO plan first. I had to wait 12 hours as the lady said then I my plan will change to pro. It has been 3-4 days now still hasn't happened. I set everything up in the first hour I had alot of problems with telecoms email system which on their end wasn't working properly and their xtra yahoo registry sign up page kept freezing on their end again wasn't working.

Yeap I wanted interleaving off hopefully it will be off now. Cheers for that help Ragnor and cyril. I love having help!

Hi, 14dB is a very good noise margin, the normal is 12dB, so you have extra noise margin (ie better). If you have 11dB attenuation then you are around 0.8km from the cabinet (cable wise) so 15Mb/s is what you should expect.

You say you have disconnections every minute, but as I pointed out before, you modem has no knowledge of this, ie it did not see the disconnections over a 42minute period, so its not a DSL issue, nor an issue with Telecom and its cabinet, so look elsewhere.

As Ragnor has pointed out, during moving from one ISP to another you may be moved from one profile to another, its the weekend maybe everything is held till monday, I would wait a couple of days more then ask whats happening.

Sorry yes my modem does see the disconnections over a 42 minute period. I have the log files for it but I didn't think I would have to go into that much depth do you want to see them? I don't think I saved them yesterday I will have to get some info. Yeah I will wait it out. I am even thinking of letting it wait for a while because I have uni from mon-wednesday work thursday-sunday then uni again mon-wednesday work thursday-sunday for a couple of weeks :| blah.

Cheers Cyril your help is always appreciated by me!

Update : I am on a pro plan now and guess what as I thought no disconections as of yet. But I am still getting higher ping than what I previously used to get with adsl2+ it's at around 30ms instead of the low 4-10ms roar! Pinged telecom and its at 30ms. I will call tommorow after uni :)

My new speeds now. What do you guys think? I currently get 13ms to telecom. I am wondering would the maximum upload speed affect my ms? I used to have 1.2mb upload with orcon on adsl2+ that was while I was connected to the exchange and now I am getting 924kb upload and the cabinet is closer than the exchange. Weird? I don't get how my upload speed could have dropped. I called telecom they said they can't do anything about it. I thought the speeds should be the maximum your line can handle? Are they tricking me or something? Please help guys I feel treated this guy from telecom treated me like a total dumbass asking for proof and asking for evidence. 2 days ago I was told by the teir 1 support that my maximum upload line speed is indeed 1.2mb now this guy from teir 2 is saying that theres nothing wrong with it.

Not much difference between 1.2Mbit and 924 Kbit, I doubt you would even notice the difference in real world usage. If you convert to KB/s it's ~150 KB/s vs 115 KB/s.

The explanation for why is basically that Telecom and Orcon use different vendors for their ADSL equipment and Orcon run a more aggressive noise margin by default.

Telecom run a safer noise margin that means sync speeds are slightly lower but more stable.
