Been asked to put this question out there....

We're looking at changing fibre providers and have narrowed it down to Orcon or CallPlus
- anyone on one of these providers ? (Or been on one of them in the past)
- Any gripes / issues ?

TIA

i'm using callplus over telstraclear fibre. previously was callplus over vector fibre in another location. i'm also using callplus for landlines via VoIP SIP trunk delivery over a seperate v-lan. I can recommend then.

callplus also offer mobile (via vodafone) too, so they can be your total telecoms company if you wish. i'm still direct with vodafone though as i have contracts with active term remaining.

had zero problems with connectivity over telstraclear fibre since deployment a little over a year ago. had few power-cut-related problems with vector fibre previously - not sure what the cause was as building switch and CPE were all UPS'd.

both companies have datacenters too. you could choose to place some of your servers there instead of in-house. this might mean that you could then have a high speed 'local' link (e.g. 10/50/100Mbps) from office to ISP/datacenter, then a smaller 2/5/10/XMbps flat rate 'internet' plan for traffic exiting your equipment/router at the data center.

Thanks Regs, but we're after fibre for the office for our connection to the outside world :)
We are planning on colocating a server as well with whoever gets our fibre request :)

My guess is that both of those providers will be using vector fibre or FX for layer 2 transit, unless they can make use of Citylink which is usually slightly cheaper.

either way you have many options when it comes to providers, just check the fine print to make sure each is offering a similar service as there can be differences in the quality or contention of bandwidth from provider to provider.

they also use telstraclear, and possibly telecom too.  Callplus had the option of either vector, telstraclear, or telecom in my location and they used telstraclear.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

just suggesting as an option.  might end up being cheaper to buy rackspace and one public internet connection than to but two internet connections and a power protection solution at the office...  not to mention the obvious benefit of still being able to work on your servers if your office gets flooded or hit by a bus...  think big picture :)

Thanks all :)

Sounddude : Looks like we're headed your way anyway for fibre and colocation - couple guys from here went for a wander through the data center yesterday.

They then came back and asked my opinion about Orcon vs others... I said Orcon - the manager said "Great, Orcon it is - if it all falls apart, it was your choice so its your fault" - great - dont break anything over there ;)

My experience with Callplus is that I rang up to enquire about a 10mbps symetrical link. I left a message and got an email from the sales manager a few days later saying she'd get me prices the next day.

Never heard back from her - I guess they don't want your business..

Hey,
Orcon and Vector have a few scheduled outages coming end of this month already scheduled, hopefully you are not online until April sometime otherwise expect a break in connectivity for a wee bit.

Fibre quotes do take a long time, 3 or so months isnt suprising if they have to build part of the network (including building entry). Eventually everything can break, but how responsive is the ISP when you call them up?

Time to find a new industry!

I think you'll find that "falls apart" is somewhat different to scheduled maintanance at hours in the morning when most people should be asleep.

Who's team are you on anyway ;)

You'd expect them to at least acknowledge the email before heading off to run a feasibility test which indeed can take up to 3 weeks. The build might take longer though.
