I'm looking for a decent (preferably free) bandwidth monitoring tool. I want to see where all my bandwidth is going, how much, when, to where, and what protocol it is.

Is there any good tools out there to do this? I only need to monitor 1 computer, (Windows 7 Ultimate)

Try NetLimiter.  This is pretty much the best option out there IME.  It is only for single machines vs monitoring an entire network, but you can connect to NL clients on other PCs with it.

I will also recommend Cfosspeed, while this software is very handy for giving priority to special streams, depending on applications or protocols (it is also doing layer 7 packet inspection) it features great graphs that can be configured to show particular traffic (i.e certain protocols or certain applications). It does also create stats about the internet usage for the current month up to one year.

For instance with this software I could be downloading the latest Ubuntu at full speed using bittorent and surf without noticing any speed impact while surfing, I won't have to shape the bittorent application to a certain speed to accommodate with my other traffic...

Some explanation about how their dynamic traffic shaping works with games, p2p and voip:

I am not affiliated with them but I am enjoying their software since 5 years now.

Just tried it..doesn't support windows 7Yell

Thanks for your suggestion,
I have been using netlimiter on an XP machine I have around here for a number of years, and while its good for traffic shaping, I would prefer another product.

Will look into the other one that  maxzzz suggested.. Sounds interesting.

Cheers

Ah yes, there is that.  NetLimiter v3 which supports W7 is currently in beta. Sorry, didn't read your OP properly :D
