It will probably be expensive, but then again, you're paying for 25-100mbit up/down.. (and then for data or data caps)..

Not to mention the couple of grand outlay, unless you're living in an apartment complex/high rise or something that already has/will get it installed.

I just want to get faster upload speed, 80kb/s isnt fast enough for me, belonging to private torrent sites requires alot of upload bandwidth, i also like hosting on games such as Call of Duty MW2. Not too fussed about ping as I doubt it will be better than what im getting atm, people can get 12ms ping to me :).

Having lived in an apartment in AKL City for the last couple of years with a fibre connection to the building (and ethernet to the apartment) I can say the number one issue was lack of technical support.

When things ran it was smooth (nice download speeds and generally low latency) but as soon as you had tech issues it was very hard to get them to acknowledge problems and best you could hope for was it being investigated until the next business day.
Reporting slowdowns got a response like "but no one else in your building is complaining"

What also didn't help was the back-haul supplier doesn't have the best customer service reputation, so it was hard to guess if issues were from the immediate network or back some hops.

I hope that in ten years 100mbps down and 50mb up will be enough!

Although they'll probably come out with a new technology allowing at least 1gbps down and up over fibre by then anyway :)

We already have Gigabit fibre - that's what GPON stands for. Existing greenfields developments in NZ all use GPON. The real issue is one of a) products appearing that give a need for need for those speeds and b) provisioning backhaul and connectivity for such services.

10G GPON also exists and is expected to be ratified by the ITU later this year.

What about hologram conferencing? According to my calculations, a super high def 3d hologram conference would take up to 550mbps.

I'm not sure how good the copper in the building is for these connections, but I would certainly want to see they did that part properly and also isolated the home wiring from the rest of the building. Then I would check that your router is functioning at 100% (perhaps give it a restart). I wouldn't recommend using building Ethernet without an Ethernet router because you should have a device that properly separates local and internet traffic.

Time to find a new industry!

ADSL supports up to 1 Megabit upstream, you might find the torrent problems are more related to internation limits placed on the connection by your ISP, especially since torrents can hog what limited international bandwidth your ISP has to share around.

Time to find a new industry!

You'd be surprised how quick torrents can get, and webwat is right, it's almost definitely being throttled in some way by your ISP. Having a RevTT account on a seedbox overseas, I see files shared in / out of my seedbox at over 80 megabits per-second. Same for public trackers.

Anyway, the Govt has kind of shot themselves in the foot when they announced that number "100m/bit down, 50m/bit up" because now Kiwi's have it in their heads, and won't settle for less.

End of the day, aside from video, bandwidth usage isn't really increasing much at all. Games still use 8 -> 24kbps (1-3Kbps) if you're a client, or obviously more if you're hosting. Voice compression is great, and not going anywhere, unless you're using a "High Definition voice codec" for example, but still, it's negligible. Flash games and things obviously use more than a static website, but overall the size of the pipe isn't what matters, but how it's managed. I've spoken to certain people in Telecom about them offering QoS from the Telco side on your ADSL line. That'd be cool!

When FTTH comes out, it's not going to be cheap. Most of NZ don't even want to buy their own router when supplied ADSL, it's almost like it has become our "right" to a free modem / router. Why would a new "premium" product come out, and completely undercut the market, both in terms of base fees as well as usage fees?
It'd be like Intel bringing out the latest Quad-core and saying "Hey look it's only gonna cost USD$50 coz we want everybody to buy it!". Not gonna happen.
Can you imagine 2degrees coming and saying "We've got high speed mobile data and instead of the usual $10 for 100MB, we're going to do $5 for 500MB!". Not gonna happen.

I've already been quoted for FTTH. $1500 for connection, then $900 a month for flat-rate 1mbps. I'm on BigTime and sync at 4mbps so I'll stick with that thankyou (even though Big Time as a plan is being cancelled). 5mbps was $1200 a month for fibre and 10mbps was $1800 a month I think? This was a couple of months back now around Feb.

FTTH *is* going to cost a premium, unfortunately. I'd be fine with ADSL2+ if the data charges were slightly larger. People (in general) are pumping more data over a long period of time, as opposed to a LOT of data in a very short space of time.

My quote for install was $2600 (fibre is one section away), then $50 per month for 100/100 MB symmetrical including 10 GB of data.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Nice! I stand corrected. Here I was shopping around thinking I had found myself the best deal :p Do you know if pricing varies much for base-plans based on geographical region

What's your additional data cost?

If it could be offered for something like that, at a reasonable rate for additional data, I'd sign up in a flash :D
