My dsl (download) speed has reduced from approx 6MB down to 240KB, Chorus have checked my line and found 5V AC on the house side. Can this 5V really affect my DSL that much???

Sounds like a faulty modem or....your sparky has installed some new phone wires too close to existing power wires?

Yes this would have an effect on your line, to the massive extent it has, I'm not sure, my first bet would be to try a second modem or remove any other phones from the line and modem and ask them to recheck with nothing on the line

Yep. I'll leave the detailed analysis to someone more au fait with lines than I but any sort of noise (such as ac hum) or line imbalance will wreak havoc with your xDSL throughput.

I imagine someone's detailed to fix it for you but a good start would be to completely remove all devices from the phone line, other than the router, and see if that makes a difference. It's vaguely possible you've got a leaky cordless base station or fax.

There's a number of other possibilities, particularly if it's been wet where you are, but if you've a 'wiring maintenance contract' or whatever they call it these days, and removing everything else doesn't help it may pay just to get someone in to repair the problem.

Hah, great minds 'n all that, what Vinnieg said also, seems we must have been posting together and I'm clearly a much slower typist
