According to the Chorus website the exchange I am connected to (HNE) Hamilton East is due to have a cabinet install on the 13/07/2010 which is two weeks away. What does this mean for my internet connection?

I am with Orcon at the moment, from what ive read it seems going back to Telecom would be the better option for a Chrous/Telecom equipment cabinet for a improved connection over what i would recieve with Orcon??

Can someone clear this up for me, my understanding of cabinets is limited... Cheers!

As far as I am aware there are pros and cons with a road side cabinet.

The Pros

Generally if your current address is showing as being within the cabinet coverage area your connection rates wouldn't be very high. The cabinet is designed to give you access to a higher connection rate due to the reduction in copper length.

The Cons

If you are on the Orcon Purple Network (ie an unbundled exchange) they will often stop supplying added services like call waiting, etc that you may have signed up to or increase the price for such services. This is meant to be due to the increased costs associated with connecting your line through Telecom Wholesale and not directly to the exchange.

Personally I would prefer to be located closer to an unbundled exchange, as this means you could connect through two service providers. One using say Orcon equipment and one using Telecom Wholesale equipment so that you have fall-over.

Quite simply it means that providing your internal house cabling is in good condition that your broadband speeds will very likely increase - possibly significantly.

Since Orcon don't have ULL gear where you are you are on a Telecom wholesale connection anyway. There is no need to change or do anything.

Have been ticking off the months to new cabnet in the Hamilton East area for as long as I have been with Orcon (2+ years). Certainly hoping for a speed improvement over the 0.45 - 1.5Mb/s I have been getting. Have had wiring checked and upgraded tp ADSL2+ modem. Can see the Chorus van down the road!

Lucky! I'm not due for an upgrade until March (per spreadsheets on Chorus' site) or July 2010 (per Telecom Wholesale maps). It'll be very nice to connect at faster than 4 Mb/s...

You won't get faster than 4 megs if you are on a FS/128 plan, need to upgrade to FS/FS. Also keep in mind that international links may be more of a bottleneck than your connection speed for some websites and services.

Time to find a new industry!
