Network set up

<filemaker>----<wireless router>-----<ADSL router>----Xtra----WWW  etc

Currently email is coming and going fine suing email clients

I have a Filemaker Pro Database that can email via SMTP, but this is failing with the error:

1502 Connection refused by SMTP server

I have this idea that none of the smtp stuff is getting out past either my routers, or Xtra's routers.

I tried telnet mail.MyDomain.co.nz and got the same error messages

Is this a port I need to open on the routers? or is this a port that Xtra Broadband need to open on their system on our behalf?

Cheers in advance (you guys have rocked in the past)

Adrian

Login in the xtra online thingy and open port 25 for your account

Port 25 filtering is off at Telecom, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the issue, any other ideas boys and girls?

Xtra doesn't allow smtp relaying, so as part of your sending you need to include a valid subscriber username.
username.xadsl@xtra.co.nz
Alternatively, try using xtra's SMTP IP address of 210.54.141.2 rather than the FQDN. The port 25 IP hasn't changed for a while.

Thanks I'll try that. Though I was trying to use the smtp server on my own domain to get this done...

Were you relaying thru your own SMTP server to Xtra's SMTP server ? It should work like that too if you use a valid xtra account.
I have used Argosoft as a PC based relay mechanism to xtra. Again, you still need a valid xtra account name.

Have this issue quite frequently as photocopier (MFD's - Multifunctional Devices) that have scan to e-mail feature often use xtra ( and other isp accounts) for smaller organisations that don't have any MS Exchange ( or equivalent) infrastructure in place.

No relay

mac---> Router---> WWW ---> SMTP server on my domain ---> WWW

Just like using my email account to send it out, but without the email client getting in the way.

Maybe the port 25 issue is a misdirection?

SS - there you're talking about an SMTP server on the lan right?

Ahh, ninefish, just reread your first post and you can't telnet out?  That makes sense.  Like SS says, telecom (or pretty much any ISP) won't you send out on 25 willy nilly.  You have to pass through their SMTP server first.  It's an anti-spam measure.

if you have windows xp

open command prompt (start > run > type cmd > click ok)
type     telnet smtpserver 25

replace smtpserver with the smtp address of your domain server.
Also your smtp server must be set to allow incoming connections from you- sometimes they only do this for connections that send emails to addresses within the smtp servers control eg. your company email addresses. It may not relay out to other domains.
If that is all good to go, the connection shouldnt say it failed. Might get a blank screen or something asking for a command or a > symbol.

I recently had a client that needed port 25 open for a txt messaging system. Telecom took 2 weeks, and about 10 phonecalls to open the port. They kept saying it was open, but on the routers themselves, it was still closed. I couldnt telnet anywhere on port 25.

At the command prompt, if i type
telnet smtp.slingshot.co.nz 25

I then get

220 ismtp02.callplus.net.nz ESMTP
500 #5.5.1 command not recognized
exit
500 #5.5.1 command not recognized
logodd
500 #5.5.1 command not recognized
close
500 #5.5.1 command not recognized
exit
421 Exceeded bad SMTP command limit, disconnecting.

Connection to host lost.

c:\>

If you can do this to your smtp server then you know its open. Try another smtp server such as your isp's and another one like smtp.slingshot.co.nz and you should be able to get something like the above.

If you have signed up for Telecom Broadband since 1 Jan this year, you need to call to opt out of Port 25.  Turning it off on your username will have no effect.

thanks cbrpilot (and the others who've contributed) I'm still trying to figure this out, but not having much luck because I'm doing 'real' work rather than progressing the efficiency issue of emails from the database.

I've called Telecom and got them to remove port filtering but it's made no difference, it also doesn't work from home on Vodafone, I guess they might have the same issues

the database is testing several ports as well as 25 though  :-)   :-)

Once I've got this project out of the way I'll throw some more time and testing at it to crack the issue
