Drunken insider secrets.

Your ISP is paying their upstream somewhere between $250 to $400 per Mb depending on who they are using as a provider. The flipside of this is that they pay 24/7 for a dedicated amount of bandwidth. So their offpeak is usually really quiet, and if they're nice they'll give you access to that unused bandwidth.

Secret to having good international speeds is picking a provider whose primary customer base is, not you. This may mean that you pay $10-$20 more per month for your ADSL connection. But their tubes will be free for the taking.

If you're using your internet connection 7pm - 11pm - not doing a huge amounts of throughout but want your youtube videos to load faster than you can watch then - you're better off with a company that specialize in hosting like Actrix or ICONZ.

If you want to do TBs of data downloading 24/7 - you're probaly better off thrown in with the Plebes at the big 4 (Telecom, Orcon, Slingshot or TelstraClear). The big guys are used to handling your kind and while they may shape you - this will give you a better experience in the long run.

I work for a global Data Protection Software company - But my opinions are my own.
