Brisbane mayor is investigating bringing fibre broadband through sewer pipes:

Would this work in new zealand?

Not too sure but it would be a sh1t job putting it in hehe. Does sound good though my only beef with FTTH is why increase tech for speed when we can't get decent data caps to accommodate what we already have.

If the costs can be kept down for both the providers and the end users then realistically it would be at least worth a look.

Some countries are so full of it that you could drive through their sewers. I know our local sewer mains are broken and full of tree roots. Any fibre would just get caught in the cleaning rods :)

Ahhh, instead of Vectors fibre to the door, we now have fibre to the looo.

Considering the bacteria in the pipes can eat the pipe itself under certain conditions I would say this idea is pure folly

Fibre through sewer pipes has proven very popular in Scotland.

Its pretty impressive what you can get out of a toilet.

Of particular interest is the price of the plans, only problem is you have to live in the cold.

NZD$90ish for 100Mbps full duplex, no data cap, no throttling, a phoneline, free offpeak calls including international, and 40 HD tv channels with a free setup decoder.

I would quite literally KILL for deals like that in NZ. Maybe we should start with Paul Reynolds?

Actually is not Dr Reynolds from that part of town :)

But yes very attractive, what you can do with the right number of sheep :)

Although its obviously early days, the phone part of the deal is not available just yet ?

Maybe we could send Mr Reynolds back to Scotland to check all the toilets over there (give him another go, right??) and perhaps he can fish out some fibre for us.

Obsolete gas pipes were being investigated by Vector a while ago. Not a bad idea. I guess you would need to break the pipe for each splice/connector drop point.

Time to find a new industry!

They do use them.  Things get a bit tricky though when the obsolete pipe isn't buried where the plans say it should be :D

I would hate to be someone maintaining that sewer network.
Too messy for my liking.
