The business news section of Stuff.co.nz, along with the news section on Woosh's web site, are suggesting that Woosh is about to lower their monthly rates.

Little detail of the new pricing is given in these articles, and the product details on Woosh's web site have not been updated to reflect the new pricing. What is known at this stage is that they will be offering their 200Mb broadband product at $24.95 (down from $29.95) and their telephone/3Gb broadband combination at $49.95 (down from $69.95). Personally, I'm on the 3Gb broadband plan but I'm not really interested in the telephone service, so I'm hoping to see a slight price drop on my current plan.

I wonder if Woosh has made this move because of good economic sense, or out of desperation to boost their stagnant customer base. Any thoughts?

It's probably a combination of both. Providing their phone service costs them peanuts once you have the gear in place to terminate PSTN calls and have a number range - look at italk who charge you $9.95 per month for a VoIP account with a PSTN number included.

$50 per month for internet + phone is a pretty good deal, the big question is whether they can afford to actually market it properly, IMHO their current poor marketing is part of the reason they have no customers.

Woosh are alreday cheap I just wish they would make their service more reliable.

Is the phone service still bugging you, Andy? It was not surprising that they had teething problems with it, but it would be reasonable to expect that things should be running smoothly by now.

It had been okay so far this year until today. I lost my telephone connection today for a few hours. People could call in to my voice mail, but they had to wait thru about 12 seconds of silence before connecting. I had a dial tone, but could not call out. I've had to reboot my gateway about 10 times today.

I'm trying to use this phone line for business & it drives me nuts whenever it does not work. When you have to make a phone call you want to just pick up the handset & dial, you don’t want to piss about rebooting the gateway & checking for dial tone. I actually got cut off part way through a call twice today. I've had my customers calling faults because they were getting a dead line trying to call me.

Woosh is already cheap, it would cost an extra $130 per month to switch back to Telecom which is why I am still hanging in there with Woosh (by a thread). I don’t care if it is getting even cheaper, that is not really what I want to here. We all seem to be beta testing guinea pigs for them on this phone service anyway, it should be free. What I want to hear is that it is getting more reliable. They need to simplify the system so non-geeks can use it as well. When my wife wants to make a call she just wants it to work, she does not want to have to remove the battery of the modem to reset it, she does not want to hear excuses about proxy servers and atmospheric conditions? Can you believe that?? When I spoke to Woosh today they actually blamed the atmospheric conditions? It is summer! I’m sure he was reading it from a book. It was a calm but slightly cloudy day, little wind & no rain. I told him that was rubbish so he switched gears and blamed overload at the local site terminal? Overload???? What kind of BS is that? They can’t find enough customers to break even, are apparently reducing prices to capture more customers & they have an overloaded network? Sounds like a good line for a Tui billboard to me.

BTW the other thing I learned talking to him today was that new gateway units are in the pipeline. They have a new modem/gateway combination coming out, so it is just one unit with one power cord. Apparently that is going to be more reliable.

Ouch. Sounds incredibly aggravating.

Let's hope they gets these problems sorted ASAP because, if they get a large boost to their customer numbers as a result of the lower prices, it could be a PR disaster if those new customers have the same experience as you.

maybe Andys experiences are not typical? i would hope not anyway. If that was the case, i dont see Woosh fone lasting very long..... i would use Woosh for my internet cuz i hate telescum but their latency is too bad and i play a lot of gaming :(

Good to hear, any saving is good.

Andy please make sure you have your modem in a really good position, I'm using my paddle booster again even though i really son't need it. Even it reception looks good, it's very important to check the signal quality by plugging it into the USB and checking it with the software, PM me if you want a stripped down, hacked version of it. for checking (about a meg),, mine was piss and was causing most problems.

Hopefully Woosh heeded my email and took some suggestions from it, not reducing "general" connection prices but still having high, off-turning startup fee's. hopefully they are the ones to have been reduced, maybe my exisiting boxful of owned modem's are worth more than $20 DSE vouchers each too now???

Looking up hopefully, if WIMAX get's hold however, woosh would be slaughtered overnight.

Unsure of the speeds yet.

Activation fees and that sodding CONTRACT still apply argh! but at least it's cheaper and with more thought put into the caps.

Thanks for that. Note that the 1GB + phone plan is currently $64.95, so it appears that there has been a $5 drop there.

I'm currently on the 3GB plan, and I'm not interested in the phone service, so it looks like I won't gain anything. I agree that the activation fees and contract are a barrier that needs to be addressed.

The new pricing plans are now displayed on Woosh's site, and it appears that the 3Gb plan is now 500kbps 'by design', so I guess that means that I won't have to pay the extra $5 per month for Woosh Turbo any more. It's not exactly a huge price drop, but I guess it would be enough for me to afford one more beer each month...

Changes.
200MB plan price drop of $5 to $24.95
500MB plan introduced at old 200MB plan price point, $29.95
10GB plan, $10 price drop to $59.95
3GB plan gets 512k as standard
phone always $20 on top of plan now
200MB option with phone dropped, replaced with 500MB plan+phone at $5 less.

Thats still crazy expensive for what you get. I've just changed to ihug 2Mb connection 10GB on peak (8am-midnight) and 10GB off peak (midnight-8am) plus no charge for uploading all for $49.95.

I dont think I would look at woosh unless I couldnt get fixed line ADSL.
