Hi Guys,

Am with telecom and am in a cabinetised area about 1km from the cabinet (as the cable runs rather than crow flies - so this may be shorter) and I am connecting as ADSL2+. However my sync speed down is around 4.5mbits and this is backed up with speedtests.

What I am wondering about, is at my previous house, I was 3km from the exchange and I was getting a similar sync speed, but I thought being cabinetised and way closer this should be a lot better?

If you think that is out of line with what it should be then I could potentially start investigating why its so low.

Distance "as the cable runs" is the way your internet works, so you should be expecting a higher sync speed. We do need to compare the attenuation with sync speed and noise margin in your modem stats to make any useful suggestions.

However I would also be interested in knowing whether you have filters on all phones and analog devices, or whether you have a master splitter installed. Does the modem cable run directly to the wall (not sharing the jack with anything) and have you tested with ALL phones unplugged.

Time to find a new industry!

Thanks for the replies. I figured I would need to post stats, so I will grab those this evening and post them

At the moment I am running the modem plugged into the first jack point from the outside DP. I am running no filters, no splitters or any phones on this line.

Hi, your stats are important, so we will see when they are posted. Other things to concider, is there a monitored alarm (monitored or not, just because its across the line is an issue) can you disconnect the line at the first jack point, so only that point is connected to the inbound line and the rest of the house wiring is removed.

Okay... here's the stats

Up speed 716000 , down speed 7160800, SNR margin 25.5, Loop att. 18.5

Haven't checked regarding the alarm side of things, but I doubt it (will check soon)

Things are a little faster today, with 6.5mbps up and .5 down.... still I would have thought it would be quicker here

Provider is Telecom and I'm on a total home package so there is no speed caps (as far as I know)

18.5dB loop attenuation is good for 14-15Mb/s on ADSL2+ if not more. Although line stub issues in your house wiring can also limit top end speed even if you have respectable line attenuation figures.

Currently 7.16Mb/s which may be due to the fact that something has limited you to ADSL1 (G.DMT), purhaps a modem setting or the port your on been limited to ADSL1, also if I am not mistaken some Drayteks need a firmware upgrade to correctly sync up to DSL2+ with Alcatel ISAMs.

Thanks for the info Cyril. I will try and isolate more of the internal wiring and see if that helps.

Also the modem is saying that it is connected as ADSL2+ - with the issue that drayteks have with alcatel ISAMs, would it still say that? or would it drop back to G.DMT ?

Hi, if it says its ADSL2+ then one assumes its all good, but I do recall there were issues with some Drayteks in ADSL2 mode, give snappernet a call and confirm.

That all said I can say from reasonable experience that you can be assured you should be able to achieve speeds at least twice if not more than what you have based on your line attenuation. This assumes correct wiring, even with inline filters or no phones attached if you have a reasonable amount of house cabling acting as line stubs then you will get low speeds with no effect on attenuation, ie once the cabling is fixed you may see no change in attenuation but line speeds significantly higher.

I have on a few occasions come across issues of recently cabinesised locations where for some human error a line has been left on the originating exchange. And of course there is still the potential of line issues elsewhere in the network beyond your ETP/Demarc, but in 99% of cases its house wiring thats the issue.

I will attempt to connect directly to the incoming jelly filled cable to isolate any of the house from the equation. This should let me know one way or another.

Okay I'm a little more confused now.

In trying new firmware for the draytek 2800 (Had an email recommendation from snappernet) I managed to get my line att down to 13.5db and SNR 23.5
Connection speed was up slightly at 7.6 down

Speedtests were identical at a hard pegged 6.5mb/s down and .5 up

So I pulled out the old cruddy telecom thompson speedtouch modem.

This thing connects with a line att of 10 / 20 (up / down) and an SNR of 14 / 12.5 - line speed is .9 up and 13.7 down and speedtests confirm this (.8 and 12)

whats confusing me is how the SNR and line att can vary so drastically between modems, or do you think maybe the draytek has seen better days?

okay ... tried all the firmware available for the draytek 2800 and found one that will sync at .72 up and 13.99 down. It does this with line att of 18.5 and SNR of 11.0.

It speedtests around .55 up and 11 down which is fine. However I've noticed that there is a ton of corrected blocks in the modem (around 300 every 30 seconds or so) - is this a problem?
