hey all,

just thought ild post this since i just found out about it and found it rather weird that the scheduled like this.

Exchange Details
Exchange Area: Waitakere
ADSL2+ Upgrade: Sep 2011

VDSL2 Details
Service Area: WAK/Exchange
Status: Completed Sep 2010

vdsl2 in this area seems completely pointless since it will go to the few people near the exchange and that's it, i saw the guys out marking bits on the road for this and thought they had maybe bought us ahead schedule but that has proven otherwise.

just wondering shouldn't you need the adsl2+ upgrade before the vdsl2 upgrade?

the equipment in this area is complete crap so i really don't see how they would jam vdsl2 into it (you can download something on 1 persons connection drive 10 mins home and be able to notice that they are downloading and even be able to tell when they stop)

all vdsl2 will do is mean that 1 person can hog 6-7 times the amount of bandwidth

i guess that the lack of bandwidth can be blammoed on the fact that there is 3 areas on this one exchange and it would be about the size of a small garden shed - ironically about 6 months ago XT was installed on the telecom radio tower next to it. guess mobiles come before landlines now lol.

Hi, you are miss reading what the maps are telling you (although I think some work is needed on what they actually report). In 12months your exchange will be upgraded to a new ISAM that supports all NZ used DSL formats including VDSL2 until then it will only provide ADSL1. This upgrade will also include a fibre backhaul (although it may already have that) and the newer GigE links that an ISAM uses.

As I said the map site seems to slightly incorrectly indicate that VDSL2 exists, its does not exist till the new ISAM is in place next year. The Sept10 date for VDSL2 is however the soft launch date of the product, it is this detail that the site is currently reporting and causing confusion.

Based on your current connection speeds (your speedtest image) I suspect you are probably currently on a Conklin that has either a 2Mb/s or 2x2Mb/s backhaul obviously this is a long way from what a GigE can deliver.

thanks for clearing that up :)

we sync at between 3mbs and 3.5mbs pretty much depends on the time of day that the modem connects. its not the fastest but it is stable staying connected for months - almost gives the feeling of having a static ip :D

Line Attenuation 52 29 dB

adsl2+ really wont do much for me as you can see in the line stats but i just really didnt understand why vdsl2 said it would be before adsl2+.

guess i should have expected it to be incorrect.

Hi, yes you line attenuation kind of spoils play :) I suspect only moving will help. I presume 3.5-3.8km from the exchange makes sense or do you think you are closer.

as previously stated WAK also has a couple of Conklin Cabinets if you work off one of these you will not get 2+/vdsl when it is upgraded at the exchange, you will only get this if/when the cabinet is upgraded.

that's about right ... ild maybe go with 4km really but yea it does kinda spoil it. my grandparents live up the road (closer to the exchange) and get 1/3 of my speeds and horrible up-time so im more than happy with it.

ild say i will be moving out at the end of next year .. or well after exams next year and ill move closer to the city (preferably near the exchange this time).

my family likes to live up here so ild say i wont be moving unless i move out :D

just wondering are "Conklin Cabinets" those really small cabinets? because they seem to like to put those ones round our area (im not comparing them to whisper cabinets but to the standard little adsl1 cabinets).

im not really looking for a speed increase as i know its not really possible but a lower ping would be nice but i guess that is part of being on wholesale (takes about 40-50ms to get to the first hop). a decent bit of that im pretty sure would be in the cables up here as there was something on our line originally just to get the phone to work so they are most probably all up the rest of the line causing a bit of interference.

Conklin is the type of equipment

(basicly a mini dslam that uses 2meg circuits for backhaul)

they are fitted into many different styles of cabinet
