I am looking for some guidance in regards to an internet provider.
I've been researching for the last 2 weeks and cant seem to find a solutions that best works.
I will be relocating to Auckland CBD come November for a year for my wife's job.  I am a software developer and work for a US company.  I am going to retain my position and telecommute as long as there are no connection issues.  I will connecting through a VPN to do most if not all of my work.  I will also be using this to keep in contact with family back in the US with SKYPE.  I am not planning on getting a phone line so I wouldn't be opposed to a naked DSL.  I am open to all price ranges, but not looking to spend hundreds a month.  I would also consider a business class connection to ensure fast speeds.  With that said, do anybody have any suggestions!?  I'm completely lost and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

Ask Telstra-Clear and CitiLink what areas you should live if you want to get fibre or VDSL.

Time to find a new industry!

First step would probably to be to find out what is available to be connected to whatever building/apartment you're going to be staying in.

Fibre and VDSL are a possibility in the CBD but are obviously more expensive thatn ADSL and depends on whether your building is connected or can be connected.

For naked ADSL I would look at maxnet, they cater more to professional and business users and are not as likely to have peak time performance issues as other ISP's like Vodafone, Orcon, Xnet.

Definately try maxnet, if not you're best to shop around, ADSL is definately the cheaper option.

As others have said get a business DSL connection is probably a better option, you hopefully will get better speeds back to the US in peak times than on a domestic package. As the others have shown Maxnet is a good option if you go naked.

The other important thing to note is that Auckland Central exchange will not have its FTTN upgrade till this time next year, so if you live further out from Mayoral drive you may experience less than ideal DSL line conditions, although this time next year things will improve dramatically.

Go to the telecomwholesale map as linked below and click on exchanges, then enter "Auckland Central", then click show ADSL2+ cabinets, this will then show the areas that are on the outer of the exchange coverage that will get FTTN upgrades in a years time. You might like to avoid getting a flat in those areas if you want the best of speeds. Once the upgrade occurs then speeds will be even better in the cabineted areas. Just something to keep in mind. It is not as bad as it sounds, many of the areas to be cabineted actually currnetly get quite good speeds, however some areas like down at the Viaduct reportedly get very poor speeds at this time.

What is your monthly data usage like? That's important to consider...

Thank you all for all helpful information. I was being to get a little overwhelmed with the whole thing. To be honest, my wife and I have never been to NZ and this is a HUGE leap we are taking.
Currently I am using about 10GB per month. However, I do a majority of my work in the office with limited "at home" connecting. With that in mind, I was thinking about a plan that provided 25-35 GB a month. I'm looking into the Maxnet and have an email out to telstra-clear to get some more information.
Again, thank you all
