I was told if I want to use more than 5 phones I cannot use dsl filters. I would have to get a splitter installed. Why is this? I was reading that installing 1 dsl filter is like cutting 700feet off the dsl range, so installing more than 5 will mean the dsl range will be gone. Is this true? Anyone tried it?
Hi, yes as you add more filters their effectiveness becomes less and less, typically around 5 filters problems start to be more than a minor issue but a big one, further if you have lots of spars or star wiring end points then reflections from all the unterminated lines in the house cause problems especially with ADSL2+, the only way to eliminate these is with a central filter, individual filters at each socket will not help with this.
If you want the best DSL performance from your house wiring then you need a central filter, anything else is simply a compromise.
There is also the Telecom line loading if you have excessive phones and telecoms devices. Each device has a REN number, and you are only permitted a cumulative total of 5.
"The REN is used to determine the quantity of devices that may be connected to the telephone line. Excessive RENs on the telephone line may result in the devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most areas, the sum of all the RENs on your telephone line should be less than five to ensure proper service from the telephone company. To be certain of the number of devices that you may connect to a line, as determined by the total RENs, contact your local telephone company."
The REN number is Ringer Equivalence number and only takes into consideration the total ringing current that is drawn, whilst it should be taken note (and care) of its not really related to the issue of too many filters.
