If you lived in a FTTH area such as those listed above you'd already know about it - you wouldn't have internet otherwise as there is no copper.

Interesting that map. Read in the paper that Telecom had just announced that they were putting a fibre link from Napier to Clive in the coming months but according to the map they already have fibre through there extensively and my (Clive) exchange does feel like a copper backhaul with the ping times etc compared to Hastings.

I know fibre has been laid to the cell sites around the area by someone.

You need to understand however that there is a big difference between fibre laid in the ground that may be used for active services or may only be dark fibre, and fibre laid for a PON based FTTH deployment.

Both are completely different.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Yeh I know there's a difference, but that map doesnt say what type of fibre it is so I dont know what's running past my house

I checked the broadband map, & See that Telecom has Fibre running straight past our front door in Botany Downs AKL, Now I know what the green box is on our front lawn, a few meters from our house, although I believe our house is only wired for copper?

I wonder what plans are available & whether Telecom offers fibre connections at a reasonable cost.

Pitty they are not offering any trials of the technology...

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. My understanding is there are now several thousand homes in these greenfields subdivsions that all only have access to FTTH networks. There isn't really anything to trial.

If you want more information check out the Brightspark website which contains details of the FTTH developments in these areas.

Ahhh, not quite true a very large number (infact a majority I suspect) are fitted with VDSL2 capable cards and are available if Telecom wanted to sell it to you, which they will very shortly.

Well the flatbush area WAS the trial for Telecom, but they cant just run some optical fibre out for one customer to try (unless that customer is making a Hobbit movie) so you are stuck with whatever connects your place until something else is available. Vector doesn't have fibre to houses at the moment, only point-to-point services on expensive longterm commercial contracts.

In other news, you can probably still get the original Wired Country fibre-to-the-house in some parts of Pukekohe...

Time to find a new industry!
