Hi, I am on the Adventure plan on Telecom which is ADSL2+ and ADSL2+ is available on my line, as confirmed by Telecom.

My Linksys WAG120N syncs at

Downstream Rate:
13404 kbps

Upstream Rate:
684 kbps

But here is my speedtest.net result

These are my line stats

--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version:  3.4.4.10.0.1
DSL VPI/VCI:         0/100
DSL Status:          Up
DSL Mode:            ADSL2+
DSL Channel:         0
DSL Upstream Rate:   684 kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 13404 kbps

                      Down         up
DSL Noise Margin:     139 dB       116 dB
DSL Attenuation:       91 dB       218 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  -380 dBm     -400 dBm

How can I get my download speeds matching those from the router sync speeds. I am about 1km from the exchange and would expect faster speeds from ADSL2.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,
Thanks

Firstly, you will never get download speeds the same as your line sync rate because of tcp overheads.

Secondly, the evening is the busiest time for the internet, so you will face congestion. So a speedtest at 7pm isnt a fair test. If you ran it in the middle of the day then you should get a better speedtest.

13mbit sync is good, be grateful!

+1

Many people are lucky just to see 10mbit even in the 10mbit zone

A dedicated 10Mbit link with a SLA (service level agreement) that guarantees you that level of performance costs in the hundreds to the thousands per month.

Residential broadband is a shared network best effort service, it's not dedicated guaranteed bandwidth so it will vary.

I can't remember who hosts the Christchurch speedtest server but there are two sides (plus various hops inbetween) to a file transfer or download.

Try this speedtest which is hosted in Telecom's core network for comparison:

http://zeus.jetstream.co.nz/

Also bear in mind that internal (to the ISP), domestic and international traffic all have different levels of contention (sharing of the available capacity).

Okay, thank you all for your comments.
I took the telecom speed test but I got the same results.

I was just wondering if there was something I could do to improve my speeds because when downloading a file it ususally hangs around 905kb/s . But thats okay, I guess I should appreciate what I got and not be so greedy ;)

Thanks everyone

The best thing you can do is multiply your Bytes (with a big "B") per second by 8 to get bits per second.

eg 905kB/s x 8 = 7240kbps. At least it makes you feel better.

Peak time speeds will always be slower because you have shared bandwidth. The modems sync speed has to carry ATM overhead, TCP overhead, HTTP overhead, and of course wait for the data to arrive if the latency is a bit high (eg international traffic). 7megs is very good throughput for broadband in NZ. Hope it gets better!

Time to find a new industry!
