Hi guys,

Moving down to wellington at the end of the year and wanted to get some recommendations on naked broadband providers. I use about 30GB data a month.

I have been with Orcon up in Auckland and they have been great. ADSL 2.

I will be living in Newton/Mt Vic/Te aro area.

Is it unbundled in these areas?

I wanted to change to Vodafone as I will save dome $$ given I have my phone with them and will save money on Sky.

But I see vodafone is not "red zone" or unbundeled which sucks. Will I notice a significant change in speed if I do go with them?

What about cable? Whats the experience with them?

Cheers,
A

Cable is awesome, had that for the last 7 years. But unfortunately had to move to a non cable area last week.

After a lot of research decided to go with Vodafone naked.
$160 per month gets the following:
30gig per month
Free modem wireless router (12 month contract)
No install fee (12 month contract)
Mysky HDi with HD ticket
Second digital decoder
Sky sports

HDi is awesome, had been waiting ages for the T-Box but it arrived too late.
The internet has been really good. The Chorus guys said the cabinet had just been updated for ADSL2, so far so good.

There are only two unbundled exchanges in Wellington - Courtenay Place and Featherston Street. Neither will cover the area you are in.

WOuld I notice a significant difference between normal ADSL on say Vodafone and cable?

I am currently with ADSL 2 in Auckland with Orcon which is pretty quick!

I think webnation meant it is better taking a telecom wholesale connection rather than a ULL connection only if your line is on a cabinet rather than the home exchange, if directly of CPC (Courtey place) then Red network is a good option, if off a cabinet then Red network is a bad option so go for a wholesale connection.

Mt Vic and Te Aro are both off CPC which has the red network on it, but if you are in a cabineted area (which much of Te Aro is if up the valley) then go for wholesale.

And by cabinet we refer to Telecoms DSL network, once more than 1.5km or so from the exchange connections are moved to fibre fed cabinets to shorten line length.

Sorry I am quite a newbie.

Could you please explaine ULL and cabinet.

I thought the only two options were ADSL and cable.

How do I look up telecom wholesale to purchase it?

What about the Newtown region is it off the CPC? Do you know if the Red Network is available there?

Thanks

Hi, ULL means unbundled Local Loop, which is what the red network is, where a non Telecom ISP puts their gear in the exchange to connect to Chorus's copper to provide you service. Telecom wholesale on the other hand is where Telecom wholesales their network (DSLAM and all) to various ISPs, the advantage of a wholesale connection is that if you are connected beyond the exchanges normal reach then a cabinet will be used and give you onceagain good speeds, but ULL connections cannot use these cabinets and infact the cabinet will have a serious impact on speeds due to interference from the cabinet connections.

Newtown (Wellington South Exchange) has no Red (Voda) or purple (orcon) ULL connections, only CPC and Wellington Central (Featherstone ST).

OK thanks.

So what would you recommend for Newtown? Cable or telecom wholesal?

How do I sign up for telecom wholesale?

Thanks

I highly recommend Telstra cable especially if you going to be in Newtown.

What about telecom wholesale? How does that work?

Also will there be a significant differece in speed on old ADSL (what I would get in Newtown) vs cable vs ADSL 2 (telecom wholesale I presume?).

Thanks a lot.

Telecom Wholesale provide wholesale services for every ISP (including Telecom) that retail xDSL based products. ISP's can use their own ULL gear where they have this, or use Telecom Wholesale plans elsewhere.
