Hey guys,
Our contract in Wellington (Lower Hutt) is due to expire in February and looking to consolidate to a single ISP, Orcon (currently on NZ Wireless and its not that great). There is no Citylink here so cheap fibre isn't an option so I'm thinking HSNS is going to be our only option (or do Telstra have a similar service that Orcon could wholesale?). We currently pay around $180 per month for 3mbps unlimited over Wimax.

What kind of costs for HSNS (including ISP services) would we be looking at for 3 or 4mbps? I presume we can go all the way to 10mbps by easy upgrades?

We used to share a floor space with a company that recent moved office and got HSNS with ICONZ (they host their servers in ICONZ DC, so it made sense).

I think it was around $1000ish per month, can't remember how much data sorry.. possibly free national and ?? international or something like that.

Best to contact your account manager at Orcon tbh.

Woah, that's a lot more than I was thinking?! Our fibre is cheaper than that lol. Yup I'll ask my account manager to get some details on the options.

Yeah I think they had large data requirements though.

Bear in mind there are 2 types of HSNS, Premium over fibre and Lite over copper via an ISAM. IIRC Lite can deliver up to 7Mbps, but to echo others, have a chat with your Orcom AM

From what I have been told when enquiring, it is all dedicated backhaul from auckland and therefore quite expensive depending upon how far down the country you are.

It was outragous. So I went with DSL and pay by the byte.

The max we could do on a 1mbit line would be something like 330gb a month.

DSL was faster - even though it wasnt dedicated, and at $100 + $1.50/gb.

[Moderator edit (MF) removed pricing on request as it was deemed confidential information]

Are you serious? That is a complete rip off - who was the ISP? Most larger ISPs like Orcon, Telecom retail etc. would have multiple handover points around the country and their backhaul to their core networks doesn't cost anything like that. Hell we have a 10mbps fibre connection that only costs $850/month.

Seriously, if I were you I'd enquire with another ISP as that pricing is actually ridiculous. Unless of course you are in the whoops?

Running off Napier Central Exchange, and one of the providers was Iconz.
Farmside was priced around the same amount for dedicated data too via satelite which i thought was just crazy.

TCL is the only unbundled telco in the area and no one called me back.

So yea, as I understand HSNS being a telecom wholesale product was all backhauled back to auckland. I think the price increase stages were Auckland, South of Taupo, and then South Island.

based on this thread that would be orcon, in auckland, via telstraclear fibre, and the price must have come down some.

i can confirm that callplus, also via telstraclear fibre, can provide competitive pricing for fibre connections and i've heard  that digital island are doing the same.

not sure what is available in Napier (but i did spend chunk of my life living there, pre-internet).  If telstraclear have fibre down there then it may be possible to get good pricing from one of these ISPs.

Yea its Telstra fibre with Orcon providing ISP services. TBH the cost of backhaul seems a bit excessive IMO, you may be better to find an ISP with a nationwide network (which definitely isn't ICONZ) so they can do their own backhaul rather than using Telecom Wholesale's. Maybe try with Orcon and as Regs said - maybe Telecom wholesale isn't the only company able to provide an actual connection.

When we got pricing from Orcon for our office, both Telecom Wholesale and Telstra had fibre already into the building. Telecom Wholesale was about $300 more per month for the same service.
