Hey there everything.

I did have a quick skim through the forum and did a few searches but only came across threads from years ago which I don't find reliable anymore! So if I have missed a thread could you please point me in the right direction :).

Now...

I'm moving to Auckland next year and will be living in the CBD as a student. In most of the apartment blocks in my price range they only provide their own internet services, you can't go through your own ISP...which annoys me in a way but anyhow I'm needing to find a quality value for money Wireless Broadband Provider that has range in the CBD.

I googled "Auckland CBD Wireless Broadband" and there's a few links to Orcons website and I put in an address from the CBD then checked out the plans and couldn't really find anything to do with Wireless Broadband so...? That leaves me a bit confused, the next one is Woosh but that's including the Wireless Phone too which I don't need as the apartment comes with a direct dial local calling phone (I still don't get why I can't get broadband through this if it's a direct dial line? can somebody with more knowledge explain that to me?) .

Any help would be very useful, or if you have any other options or experience with the "internet" they provide in the Columbia Apartment Block.

Cheers
Bevan

I've just had a look at their website and euuuuuuuwwwwwwwww they only change the sheets every two weeks. That's DISGUSTING.

Now back to the topic at hand, I assume you've got their internet pricing, your other options would seem to be Woosh, Telecom, 2 Degrees and Vodafone.

2 Degrees would probably be my first choice if it was me.

I could only find Orcon's pricing for their normal broadband plans, not this "wireless" they keep talking about on the ads! haha, unless they're just talking about a wireless router?

Telecom have wireless? or are you talking about those prepaid stick things?
They're way to expensive for me at the moment.

Woosh have Phone line + 20gb for $80 a month, that isn't too bad.
But is there anything cheaper?

Wireless != Cellular, at least not necessarily.

However basically your options are:
- Cellphone Providers (Vodafone, Telecom, 2DegreesMobile
- Wireless ISP's (Woosh(
- Wireless Resellers of Araneo or Kordia wireless products (ICONZ leap to mind)
- Anyone who does interwebs based on Wifi tech (pass)

Out of the Wireless ISP's I think only Woosh have a product geared at residential customers?

Your best bet at least to start with will likely be Cellular based, a 'Cellular Broadband on a Stick' type product. You can get these on contract or on prepaid basis, and it'll at least get you off the ground.

Woosh is all I've been able to find as well.
It's pricing isn't so bad compared to the prepaid sticks, $81.95 for a phone line and 20gb broadband.
I'll be a student as I said so 20gb would be enough since I'll be busy with study etc...

Do you have any idea what sort of hardware I would need for this?

(as i understand it) Woosh connections are typically supplied with a CPE device - a router that talks to the wireless. You just front it with your ethernet port.

For the Cellular products you can get PCMCIA or USB connection devices which are basically cellphones-without-being-a-phone; they have a sim card and are connected to the cellular network by way of a 'virtual' number.

Either way the hardware requirements aren't hard to meet and the selected provider will give you the answers you need.
