I am looking for a good router/switch that will support QoS throttling, not just QoS prioritizing, i want be able to set down/up bandwidth/IP group, maximum connections/ip group and of course it should have ARP function as well.

so far i am aware that these feature won't normally available at consumer level products, i am currently search for one even it is a bit pricy!

Any suggestions？
(sorry if this is a double post, it appears the search function on geekzone is not working for me.)

is there a budget in mind?

I know that the SonicWall products used to be able to enforce "bps" levels for services that were defined. That might be one option.

thats what i meant..products that SonicWall offers are too expensive for home-user.

I am now looking at Opensource firmware Tomato/DD-WRT that hopefully will do the trick,
i just need to find the right model.

anyone had experience with those?

Get a Mikrotik board such as a RB450.

There is a learning curve to RouterOS but not much it can't do.

anyone had experience with those?

Do you need wireless N and gigabit?

If not: Linksys WRT54GL or Asus WL-520GU are good choices
If so: Asus RT-N16 is a good choice

I would look at the Tomato USB and Tomato RAF versions over Tomato (original) and DD-WRT. TomatoUSB does not have a per ip bandwidth limiter but RAF does.. however with good enough classification and rules you probably don't need per ip/mac limiting imo.

thanks for all the good info! especially those guides and examples, will just save me alot of time.

So far i don't care much about gigabit LAN or wireless N, so will check out all the above models you mentioned.

Tomato seems really nice with real-time monitor and graphs, however if i apply a QoS control for all p2p downloads for example, will too much connections attempts from a single computer makes the router nonresponse or overheating?

other-words: performance issues?

It's pretty solid haven't been able to overwhelm it but if you have many users the connection limits, timeouts etc are all either configurable via web GUI or iptables commands/scripts.
