Hi Team, a bit of advise please if you would be so kind.

I have just moved house, and didn't even stop to think that there may be a problem with getting BB at the new house.

Unfortuneatly there is no ports available in my new area (Kitewaho Rd, Swanson, West Auckland) - I am 33rd in the queue and the person on front of me has been waiting over a year.

Mobile broadband is not really an option, I'm looking to be in the 60 -100 GB usage range. I've checked all the wireless options I can think of - NZWireless could not help, Farmside only goes to 30GB, Woosh don't cover it.

Compass sounded good, but then I failed the Line of Sight Test - but get this - the technician never visited the site, he aparently got his info from Google? The thing is, I have a beautiful view of the sky tower, top to bottom and miles around as well.

Anyone have any advice? other options? Perhaps a way to get Compass to review their decision?

Any private installers interested in a job to prove Compass right / wrong?

Cheers
Gary

I have just had a look on the Broadband Map and found this company:

Bush Wireless

Hopefully they can help you!

Any other ISPs got gear in the exchange? that is vodafone, orcon, slingshot, telstra clear?

If you are on a telecom waiting list then they are probably not putting more ports in since they will be starting to cabnitize the area soon which will free them up.

looking at www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps it would seem there are no plans to cabinitise that area at this stage.

looks like you are out of luck for fixed line broadband. unfortunately that is the nature of rural addresses, it's just too expensive to provide fixed broadband there. The RBI may help this, but not for a while yet.

it's a tradeoff you have to make when deciding where to live.

want access to better infrastructure including broadband? move to the city.
want tranquility peace and quiet? move to the countryside.

Apparantly more and more people are putting broadband as one of the conditions of sale of houses these days.

I know people too paranoid to change ISPs because they know there is a waiting list on their exchange and they dont want to risk losing it. Its nuts that there is a port shortage at exchanges with 30+ people waiting, but if somewhere on that exchange is due to get a cabinet soon, then I can totally understand why telecom/chorus have made that decision.

how can they do that?  there is simply no way a vendor can guarantee that the purchaser will be able to get broadband in the property.

Nuts alright. Even more nuts is there is no planned upgrade, and still people have to wait 300+ days. And even more nuts on nuttier is tha there is a bit of development going on ( in my semi-rural area anyways), secondary dwellings, small ( and not so small) rural businesses starting up, landowners splitting off sections for 10-house lots, etc  all requiring something a bit more than dial-up. All these things going in, and not one squat of ADSL-2 investment, not even ADSL investment. Wireless B/B is dicky, and effing expensive for data charges, woosh, etc are just outside coverage. Satellite next I guess :-(

16th in line, and the last person had to wait 316 days.

Is there a regulatary body whose door than I can knock on so that they give Telecom a poke in the eye and advise 'em to go and have another look ( with the remaining good eye, I would assume .. )

Offer doesn't go uncondiditonal till broadband is installed and working. Simple as, same as not going unconditional unless they sort out a missing building consent etc.

but won't that be unknown until they have already moved in?
i.e. the current owners are using up a port, but the they can't know whether the new owners will be able to get it, or whether one of their neighbours is a waiter and so will get it as soon as it is freed.  this won't become apparent until the current owners move out, which happens after the sale goes through.  and at that point there is no backing out.

Yes, that body is the government who have seen fit to take a long time to promise the world, and as of now still deliver nothing.

Why should telecom invest in this when they dont have to, have not agreed to before govt meddling like the cabinet installs, and may have someone else get given a crapload of money soon to put something else into the area?

Send an email to the govt thanking them for screwing up the broadband market and not doing a thing about the part of it that is a problem.

Perhaps in years and years time once the sloth like govt departments have decided who will get money to install broadband, and once whoever that is has got thru all the objections from stupid hippies who dont want progress, you might get broadband directly.

in the meantime, find someone within line of sight that can get it, buy some wireless bridges and get a connection installed at theirplace and bridge to it from yours.

Well, thats why you change the broadband to the new owners name before finalizing the sale, or order a new connection or whatever.

In the name of selling a house, ordering another broadband connection is a small thing to do, yet without it living at the property may be hard for the new owners.

Put a request in to see if they can jumper you to cabinet MSY/F, there should be spare ports there.
I belive there is an old Conkin up where you are, which is probably where the lack of ports are.

The map looks like no planned cabinet for that street, all cabinets appear to be neighbouring areas. Perhaps its too rural? Try an ISP that has unbundled dslams at the exchange. I doubt much wireless would be available with the hilly terrain around there.

Not an option here, they are 8-10km from exchange.
