Hi all

I just found this guys presentation at defcon 18
It is a really good overview of IPv6 and how the end is near - and especially how our community need to be prepared for when clients start asking us why they cannot get to certain websites.

Most stuff i have been reading is really confusing like how it doesnt get natted, instead isp's hand out subnets to each of their customers with 65,000 avaliable addresses - more than enough for every device in the home.

Yeah I have got my own subnet for IPv6 - Most devices in the house and also my work server has got a IPv6 address. Things are working well. A tad too many addresses though :P

I have IPv6 at home and at work but the problem is none of my routers support it natively! Only using it for testing atm but its a real pain that they keep releasing firmware that doesn't include support...

When is datacom getting v6 transit in their datacenters? Not long now till IANA runs out of v4. APNIC is slated to be the first RIR to run out at the end of this year.

I think that IANA exhaustion will be the main catalyst, it's a milestone that can't be ignored and will awaken alot of companies up

I think you mean APNIC, AP companies can ignore the IANA exhaustion, but then they can't get any more IPs from APNIC, uh oh!

No no I mean IANA, once the RIR's have their last /8's given to them you then have a more defined runout time for APNIC, no company is going to look at v6 when the RIR's out they will look when the IANA's out (mainly due to the press storm that will happen around it)

If a company waits till APNIC's out then bad luck for them

It's taken people this long to get v6 going and pretty much no one has it going yet, so..

Then they will be quite shocked, depending on the company/industry you are talking about the v6 migration will be quite big moreso if there is alot of inhouse custom software. Waiting till APNIC run's out is a foolish idea that will backfire badly is some industries.

Counters like that are a bit misleading, we have 7 /8's left and when we hit 5 one is handed out to each of the RIR's which means that right now if APNIC asks for another 2 /8's tomorrow (APNIC is widely expected to ask sometime this month for another 2 /8's) then we are at the end tomorrow.

It doesn't matter what numbers of websites you throw at some PHB's they have heard it too many times before and simple wont put time or energy into v6 untill IANA's actually run out

Widespread adoption won't happen that quickly, the issue right now is there is no compelling reason for consumers to start using v6 and until that happens there is no reason for most content providers to change. I would say widespread adoption is still 3 - 5 years away

Consumers will drive adoption when ISP's are forced to do large scale nat'ing of their new clients due to v4 IP shortages, When public IP's on your broadband account are $20+ a month on top of your normal fees. ISP's will drive adoption when their support centers are swamped with calls complaining that their XBOX360/PS3/Whatever is complaining about NAT, Or SIP call's no longer work or any of the billion other reasons double NAT will mess with things.

IANA runout will cause the ISP's and large companies to start looking at and implementing v6, RIR runout will trigger ISP's and hardware vendors to start supporting it and publicly offering it. ISP v4 runout will cause consumers to look at their own CPE.

Widespread adoption can't be 3-5 years away, Too much breaks with the LSN needed to extend v4's life out till then. It'll be a waterfall effect as each of the tiers finds the issue of not doing v6 is harder than doing v6
