So this is the first time I'll be actually connecting my own broadband and I have called slingshot about their Just Broadband option which is Naked DSL.

The guy said the line needs a number on it, does this mean I need to pay line rental each month as well?

It's confusing...I thought the whole idea of Naked DSL was so you can get broadband without having to worry about a phone line?

Please can somebody come to my aid and help me out within the next two days!!

p.s: the phone line is in an apartment building

Slingshots provisioning is whacked with it, other ISPs can install a new naked connection to a place with nothing, slingshot want an existing landline. Why? no idea. No reasonable explanation for it in the past when asked.

Out of interest why are you choosing Slingshot given the number of complaints I keep reading about them?

Slingshot are possibly the worst way to go! You only have to read the forums here.

Slingshot is overall okay - they do have their problems but the 40gb plan I'm on now plus free data from 2am-8am works well. I complain and complain when we have outages and what not but lately I've been host in all my games on Black Ops and downloading at the normal 10-20Mb p/s...will be in the "better network" they have as well since it's Auckland Central so hopefully that will boost speeds.

I've dropped the idea of Naked DSL because the price of that is $82 a month vs. $96 for homeline and broadband.

Naked DSL:
$82 for 25gb

Phone + Broadband:
$96 for 40gb + free local and $2 for a 2 hour call

Split between two that's not a huge increase.

I would give snap a go, you do not need a phone line first like with slingshot.

Edit: $90 for 30gig with snap and you can also get 3 nights uncapped with snap for $5 considering you can do 80gig during that time its defiantly worth it thats my 2c
We have both snap and slingshot connected at our flat

Man it's crap to be on dsl... I confess I don't really know what the pricing is.

For what you're paying I've got 4 phone lines, a truck load of local calling (more than we manage to use each month), 40gb of data, and hours of included national calling.

And I've got 2mbit upload speeds.

I signed up for the same thing over 2 months ago, and after 1 month they finally find out that they don't supply it in my area (glendowie) as Telecom exchange there is not updated.

As their customer service is horrible (never gave me any info on what was going on, or called back when they promised) I decided to not go with them. Maybe you have a better experience with Slingshot but I would not go near them. just a friendly advice.

Signed up with a much smaller (xnet) ISP which connected me within a week and yep, on a NAked DSL connection.

The last guy I got on customer service was really really understanding and took a lot of time explaining everything to me! So hopefully this is a sign that things are looking up for slingshot.

I also do take into account that most people who have been satisfied with their customer services wont say anything because they're contempt and the people who're annoyed will say how they feel because well...they're annoyed.

Certainly hoping they're not slacking off since I don't have forever to mess around with getting internet, if there's any sign they're crap I'm going straight to Vodafone :P but I'm pretty sure their broadband is available in the CBD.

I have to indeed say thaat they have always been friendly, and always seemed helpfull ("I understand, yep that's wrong what happened, I'll make sure they call back" etc etc). Also calls were answered almost immiseately. But they never did what they said.

So my thinking is that if you get connected etc, and it works all good, you'll be fine. But if you need customer service, you'll be screwed bigtime.

Remember they have a 12 month contract. So if it goes pairshaped 3 months later you have no where to go.

My view is that if an isp is willing to have no contract, he is confident that there is no reason why you want to leave. Slingshot clearly does not have that confidence.

Let us know your experience though.

I have signed up and the person I spoke to did seem a little clueless on what things she should be asking me about but being with them at my parents home and sorting out the internet problems there I made sure she checked over everything and told me what I've signed up for and when I should expect to have it running. If it's not up by 10 days she said to call back because something may be wrong with the line (they should call me but at least IF I call them I know I'll be getting the information I need).

I do agree though, once you're connected and everything it goes smoothly (parents home has been with them for 4-5 years). If they're that bad with quality of service then I'll just terminate the contract pay $100 and jump over to xnet who seem to care a lot more about their customers.
