More and more parts of the internet will become unreachable/unusable for those of you without an IPv6 solution in place. The effect will not be major at first.

Your tubes are not about to fall out of the sky. (But you should still be absolutely panicking).

I for one welcome the chaos.

I have 9400 tins of SPC Spaghetti (would support Watties, but SPC is just MUCH nicer, and cheaper), and enough bottled water and loo paper to see me through the IPv6 changeover, World War III, the brutal Trans-tasman Australia/NZ territorial conflict of 2014, and the demise of my beloved Stargate franchise, as SGU, as excellent as it is for SGx fans, is getting a little esoteric for the masses, and is probably the nail in the coffin for large-scale network tv funding.

Yep 10 Days
Have a IPv6 test. (http://test-ipv6.com/)
World IPv6 day is June 8th, 2011. No problems are anticipated for you with this browser, at this location.

Easy chicken little,

First off ipv4 isn't going to be "full" within the next 10 days. To understand whats going on you have to understand how IP's are given out

At the top level you have IANA, These guys control all IP allocations globally. What they do is hand out /8
's (Block of 16million IP's) to RIR's which are in charge of 5 regions around the world. These RIR's have policies in place to decide who they will hand out smaller chunk's of these /8's too, They deal with companies and non-profits and anyone else who fits the policy. They hand out these smaller chunks to various ISP's in their region. From here the ISP hands out an IP to you as a client, this is either out of a pool of IP's thats always changing or is static to you.

Now understanding how it works you can understand that all of these predictions of IPv4 runout are based on when IANA hands out the last /8, which is what will be happening soon. When this happens the various RIR's will still have IP's to allocate to ISP's etc, The time it takes RIR's to run out various from region to region but APNIC which covers NZ is expected to run out within 6-9 months. When this happens the ISP's will still have some ranges to hand out aswell which depending on the ISP could take some time aswell.

APNIC is expected to be the first RIR to run out so for us in NZ we have 1 month for IANA runout, 6-9 months for APNIC runout and another 3-6 months before ISP's start running out. IANA runout is the starting gun for IPv6 rollout for anyone who isn't already doing it which is why most people refer to IANA runout as the end of IPv4

Then there's carrier grade NAT after that... so we can spin the v4 space for another decade or so... providers in .us are already doing this on mobile networks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v26BAlfWBm8 - remember, NATs are good.

The real issue is:

1. Web sites that are only in v6 land - you won't get to them without help, and yes they are being built now.

2. v6 users who just don't care about your content because v6 content is quicker and less hassle. Sure, they'll be gate ways from v6 to v4, but is your customer using one? Does their gateway work properly? How cares... if you 'dual stack' your content now then it's just not an issue.

Now if you want to know which bits I'm being honest about and which bits are sarcasm then http://www.ipv6.org.nz/

CGN, urgh. We've spent the better part of 2 decades fighting with normal NAT in the home without doing it at the ISP.

CGN's just going to break too much to be effective for anything other than plain old web browsing

Yes... but now you're going to have the joy of double NAT as well.

Skype works well over double nat.  I was testing it just last week.  If skype can do it the sky won't fall.

Skype's great but what about SIP? Need STUN to get around that if it still works. XBOX and PS3 complaining about NAT all the time. Wanna run a e-mail server? Sorry you can't. Active FTP, Peer to Peer etc the list goes on and on and on, I know of brand name PBX's that have SIP cards that can't do STUN so there busted.

It's the easy way out in the short run but once your call center starts getting hammered from users complaining it's better to go dual-stack

http://mailman.internetnz.net.nz/mailman/listinfo/ipv6-techsig

Last time I asked there was only one unit that's ticked off - a Cisco, but I know there's more in the pipeline currently.

Having said that, you might then ask which ISP you're talking about....  I only know of one in .nz that's doing v6 at present and many big providers don't have an eta.

However you can do tunnels now, so you only need a router that will terminate a tunnel.

I"m playing with MikroTik at present for that.

Crap.  I wouldn't be buying anything that doesn't have a v6Tick on it right now unless I really had to!

What I'd love to know is this:

1) Why are devices (routers, wireless routers, ADSL modems etc) still being sold that are ipv4 only?
2) Why aren't the ISP's and upstream providers pulling finger and moving to ipv6 yet? the issue has hardly been hidden - it has been talked about ad nauseam for the last decade and yet ISP's are sitting on their hands doing nothing.

How long have the IT seen this issue coming towards them like a freight train but instead of doing something about it there has been a completely state of denial (this 'denial' demonstrated by the complete lack of doing anything).

Ok, go right ahead - if your answer is particularly good I'll give you a cookie!
