So basically i do internet marketing for a living holding conference calls to America most nights for regular meetings and updates. Atm i have massive slow downs at night (max 100KB/s). Im on FS/FS residential with XNET.

Looking at getting a business connection. The Telecom 60GB ($97) is looking pretty good. Over usage is $1.50/GB which is fairly cheap as well.

The only thing im stuck on is that no one can offer me ADSL2+ although its available at the exchange. Speaking to Telecom business as i post this and basically they are looking into if they can get the line that goes into my house switched (Im on the line that feeds into the other side of the exchange (ADSL1)).

So yeah im located in Taradale, Napier.

Costing isn't an issue - I even offered to pay for all the costs for getting the connection re-done and jumped to the ADSL2+ racks.

Meh. Any advice?

You probably don't have many options until your exchange is upgraded - that would make Xnet faster also.

If you look on www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps you'll see when you're going to be upgraded or cabinetised.

Well it originally stated Sept 2010 - Visited the exchange in Oct as part of my degree and half the exchange was upgraded. They have now bumped the date to June 2011.

Funny thing is, friend around the corner now has ADSL2 (Same exchange) Yet when you put in his address it says June 2011 also.

You are going to basically get the same performance no matter if your "business" or "residential" if you are going mainstream ADSL. All the ISPs including Telecom retail can only provide what Telecom Wholesale has available so best to try to talk directly to Telecom wholesale maybe.

Your other option is to get a true business connection like SHDSL which Telecom wholesale call HSNS (most ISPs offer this) or a wireless service.

Im about 400-500m from my exchange.

Current connection:

Downstream Rate:
7616 Kbps

Upstream Rate:
960 Kbps

5.69Mb/s is like 700KB/s? That is actually worse than my current connection through the day (Averaging 850KB/s~)

But HSNS is guaranteed bandwidth so doesn't suffer the same contention issues as you do now. The problem would be that I doubt you'll be willing to pay the going price for it.

A quick search resulted in "contact us for pricing" pages from Orcon and Iconz. That's a good warning that it'll be prohibitively expensive :P

This is the pricing I got for a Wellington connection from Orcon. It includes unlimited National but International is on top of that:

7MB HSNS Circuit                                             $1004 per month (probably not an option J )

5MB HSNS Circuit                                             $ 730 Per month

2MB HSNS Circuit                                             $ 377 per month

1MB HSNS Circuit                                             $ 252 per month

Yea its pretty ridiculous TBH but that's Telecom Wholesale for you.... Orcon are apparently going to offer an HSNS equivalent on exchanges they have equipment in with a 10mbps symmetric connection (copper) being around $400 a month.

International Prices:
$100 20GB + $5GB overage
$200 50GB + $5GB overage
$450 256kbps CIR 1mbps PIR unlimited

Their international is pretty damned expensive I have to admit. Xnet was like $100 per 1mbps

HSNS is not really intended to be a replacement internet connection, it's mainly for WAN connectivity or dedicated connection back to an ISP.

As you said, it's dedicated bandwidth - you ask for it, you get it. Great for WAN work, and if you get a quality internet product.

But even then, that will only give excellent quality to the hop-off point - Auckland. Then you're straight back to the mercy of packet over water, and the investment plans of your isp....

All I can say is Welcome to the Taradale.

I am also connected to the same exchange and have tried every means possible to get switched over to the New ADSL2 rack but by the sounds of it they don't want to move over other customers.

I guess all we can do is wait and see if it will really come June 2011, or whether it will be the 4th time they have prospered it
