Hi everyone:

I am wondering whether could I get some help and advice from some of you helpful folks here.

I an with Snap Internet on their Naked DSL plan, and I have a Linksys WAG310G modem/router.  The area I am in has had the cabinet upgraded to ADSL2+ late last year, and whilst my sync speeds are good (in the range of 15-18 Mbps down and 950+ kbps up), whenever I do a speedtest.net test to the Christchurch server (which is hosted by Snap), I am only achieving about 5.5-7 Mbps of download throughput.  This was done via the Ethernet port on the device and not via WiFi.

I mananged to borrow a Thomson TG585v7 from a mate, and run the speedtest to the same server and the download throughput is quite often achieved in excess of 13 Mbps.  Therefore, I am wondering whether is the Linksys WAG310G incapable of sustaining ADSL2+ throughput (i.e. > 10-12 Mbps) when you have good sync rates, or if there something wrong with my configs.  For the record I played about with the PPPoA MTU size setting for the circuit and found that the best would be to leave it at the default of 1492.  Is there anything that I can do to improve my throughput on my WAG310G, or do I have to get another modem.router?

The following are some of the stats:

Modulation Type:
ADSL_2plus (configured as ADSL_2plus)

Status:
Up

Provider:

Downstream Rate:
16994 Kbps

Upstream Rate:
956 Kbps

Downstream Noise Margin:

Upstream Noise Margin:
13.8 dB

Downstream Attenuation:
13.0 dB

Upstream Attenuation:

Downstream Power:

Upstream Power:

Hi, not too sure whats going on, but if another modem can achieve good speeds with the same/similar bearer (sync) rate then it implies the WAG is not up to snuff.

Personally I dont like the WAGs but in general I have never found them to not achieve reasonable throughput speeds relative to the sync rate, but something here suggests there is an issue.

The correct MTU for a PPPoA connection is 1500, that said 1492 should not have a major impact in this scenario, I think I would try just another modem to compare again to confirm.

Have you got the lattest firmware for the WAG.

Cyril

Thanks for your reply and suggestions Cyril.

I have tried with a Belkin and it also obtained good speeds similar to the Thomson, so I am also wondering whether that is pointing to the fact that the WAG is not up to it.

And yes I do believe have the latest available firmware (WAG310Gv1-1.00.03(100701-1727).img), is that correct that is the latest?

Thanks again.

Does sound like the WAG310G is suffering throughput limitations.  It may be best to check this with Xnet's helpdesk as it might be faulty or a misconfiguration issue.

I think the Linksys SRP527 is the "Xnet" certified replacement for the WAG310G.

Thanks Ragnor for your help and suggestions.

I must say that I whilst I am a VFX user/customer, I still use my SPA2102 as the ATA for the VFX phones, and that the WAG310G is only being used as a modem/router in this instance.  I bought the WAG310G about 1 year ago when my old WAG200G died, and I thought I'd replaced both the WAG200G and SPA2102 with this all-in-one unit, but later I decided to keep using the SPA2102 as my ATA since I have no issues with it hence I ended up using the WAG310G only as a modem/router.

Also I should also clarify that I am only using Xnet for my VFX services, and that Snap is my ISP, therefore I doubt that Xnet will have anything to do with the configs of my modem, and that I am pretty much on my own.  Having said that I must say that Phil (Maverick) has been really hlepful to me with some suggestions and pointers on how I can improve my speed, but they unfortunately it is not working well for me.

One last thing that I could try is to do a factory reset on the unit and reconfigure everything again from scratch and see if it makes any difference.  However, in the meantime, if any one here has any other suggestions then I would like to hear them if possible.

Thanks again.

Is your pc actually connecting to the router with a 100/1000 full duplex connection?

This is the latest code ,Your suggestion is good one though, factory default it and see if the issue persits it may be something in the config that may be limiting your connection factory defaulting will help to rule that out.

Have you tried that speed test during different times of the day? Try 8am, lunchtime, 3pm, 7pm. See if there's any difference.

If you can get close to your sync rate (-10-20%) then it's just backhaul congestion, nothing you can do about that. :)

Yes it is connected @ 100 Mbps full duplex.

Well no I haven't really tried at different times of the day.  However, in my original poast I mentioned that speedtest using the TG585v7 or a Belkin modem/router (sorry can't remember exact model) immediately after testing with my WAG310G yields results that are about 12-14 Mbps throughput.  That leads me to think that it is unlikely to be any backhaul congestion and more likely to do with the WAG310G.

I think that I will give it a try by doing a factory reset and reconfigure the router again and see how I go.  The "challenge" for though is to find some time to do it (discreetly) and not drop any WAF points! :P

Using a WAG310G, with a similar sync speed to you, I can max out the connection (at the right time of day...).

The have a number of QoS options  - if some of these are on, it may be reserving bandwidth for something else, so a factory reset and reconfigure is a good idea.

Thanks RunningMan for the pointers. Yes I do have QoS enabled so will definitely do a factory reset and start again.

Hi folks:
OK, I did a factory reset and reconfigured from scratch and this is what I have obtained:

ADSL sync Stats:

Upstream Rate:

So it looks like the factory reset did the trick!  I couldn't be happier!

Thanks everyone for your help.

Brilliant - did you happen to save the old config first, so you can reload it and spend hours figuring out exactly which setting went wrong Foot in mouth

Well.. I "did" saved the old config somewhere... :P But I doubt I'll be dwelling too much on it now that it seemed to be working OK.  At first glance the only difference is that I have left the QoS settings as disabled whereas my old settings had QoS turned on...
