Hello Everybody,

I'm just arriving in NZ (Auckland) in middle of july. I'm an internet heavy user who spend lots of time downloading movies, audios and videos. I would like to hear from you guys what would be the best ISP in terms of speed and quota limit for a person with that profile. I'm accustomed to surf on internet without any limits of download and upload, but I guess that a quota around 400Gb - 500Gb per month is enough to satisfy my needs. About the speed, I've got a 15Mb speed and I'm pretty sure that any ADSL2+ ISP in NZ can beat this, so my concerns are much more about the quota limit than the speed service.

Please share your experience.

Thanks !

You want a cap of 400-500GB a month?! Orcon http://www.orcon.net.nz would be your best bet, their maximum allowance is 330GB but it'll cost you ($365 per month on their Platinum+ plan) or 325GB for $325 if you wanted Naked DSL. These prices apply if you are connected to their equipment in the exchange/cabinet in the main centres (Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga).

If you're going to be outside of these areas it would be $375 a month for 330GB.

There are not many ISPs that have uncapped plans. A company called Slingshot do (http://slingshot.co.nz/Default.aspx?p=264) however the traffic is managed and a search on here will tell you their speed and customer service isn't the greatest at the moment.

If you want fast and consistent speeds look at Vodafone and Telecom, however their caps are nowhere near what you're after (60GB and 80GB respectively).

Hi Corksta,

Thank you for your feedback on this.I guess 330Gb with ADSL2 is definitely enough for what that I need. However, it will definitely break my budget. I'm currently paying US 85,00 per month for 10Gb speed with unlimited quota and I'm willing to go twice than that to get a similar service. However, 375,00 is more than 3 times what I'm currently paying including landline services.

For this same price here I can get a dedicated fiber optic service with 100Gb without quota limit. I know there's no comparison here, and NZ has some difficulties with internet services but 375,00 is incredible expensive in my opinion. I confess that I'm really surprised with this.

Thank you regardless and It gives me certainly a brief idea about this matter.

If someone else wants to add your comment on this, please, feel  free and go a head.

Just fixing a mistake.

About the speed internet that mentioned previously, I meant 100Mb not 100Gb.

Sorry for that :)

Would suggest www.nznet.co.nz , they offer a full speed unrestricted ADSL2 plan for $159.95 +GST (Total $183.95p/m)

Its outside my budget, but within your budget by the sound of the figures and costs you mention. Plus I dont believe there is a contract so you could always cancel if it doesnt work out?

You might be able to find some nznet users on here who can comment on the service they provide..

That seems cheap, wonder how the service is.

have you considered maybe not downloading quite so much stuff?

If you are downloading 4-500GB of entertainement type content every month, even HD movies, then I really don't see how you can be using it all.

Welcome to NZ.  You won't be able to get anything near what you were getting in the US.  Orcon or nznet maybe your best bet, but for your budget you won't be getting any where near 400-500gigs a month.

Could be backing up a large amount of data to the cloud each month.  The amount of data you use isn't directly related to the amount of entertainment type content you download.  I wish ISPs would share that notion though.

Hosting Direct's new plans might appeal to you, they are fairly unproven as an ISP though only starting to offer DSL fairly recently.

Un-metered naked adsl (no phone landline phone service) for $159+ GST per month
http://www.hd.net.nz/naked-dsl/unmetered-naked-dsl

Un-metered standard adsl (must have an landine phone service) for $99 + GST per month, with standard adsl you also a phone service so ~$40-45 for one from Telecom.
http://www.hd.net.nz/adsl/unmetered-adsl

NZNet has a 200GB and unmetered plan too
http://www.nznet.co.nz/services/dsl_broadband.php

I would avoid Slingshots unmetered plan as performance is awful.

In general Internet is expensive for heavy data users in NZ due to geographical isolation, most content is hosted in the US... international transit over the existing submarine fibre optic cable to the US is expensive.

Any ISP's offering un-metered plans generally have worse peak time performance than ISP's that offer plans with data caps.  To offer an un-metered plan in NZ at a reasonable price you have to cut corners in contention ratio ie: the number of users vs the amount of international bandwidth the ISP has.

Hey gmball,

I guess nznet service fit exactly with my needs.

How about the quality of service and broadband speed? Is it good? have you tried that before?

If the speed gets anything around 10 - 20 Mb is absolutely enough for me.

Firstly the ADSL2 line rate in your modem/router will primarily depend on how far your place is from the exchange or cabinet.

If you are within 2km of the exchange or cabinet you should be able to sync at >10Mbit, however that's just line rate.

After your data gets to the ISP it depends on their national and international transit. Usually you will be able to get pretty much max line rate to national servers, international performance is way more variable it depends on when and too where.

With ISP's offering un-metered plans I highly doubt you will get >10Mbit in peak time 4pm-11pm to international servers.

Firstly it depends on your line sync rate, on DSL. Otherwise you probably won't get close to 10mbit during peak times (4pm-midnightish) on an "unlimited" plan.

Basically you have a choice of speed + datacap or crap speed + no datacap.

With those unlimited plans you will not get more than 1Mbps download all the time i guess, then you can hardly do 300GB even 24/7.

Well...I'm considering a good balance between speed, data cap and budget.

Said  that,  I meant that a speed 10 - 20 Mb,  200 Gb data cap and a maximum of 200 bucks per month is affordable and reasonable for me.
