Hi,
I am trying to pair 2 routers (a bit futile, given the models) one being a Cisco 837 ADSL router and the other being the telecom supplied thomson 585v7. The reason I want to use the thomson is because of the wifi ability.

Why am I not upgrading the cisco to a wifi model? mostly because I'm reluctant to purchase any new equipment until I see something better come out in terms of supporting VDSL2.

I have everything working, in a sense, the wifi connects and uses the Cisco's dhcp pool (turned off on the thomson), but speeds over the wireless to the internet are at about 1/6th what they should be. (Speedtests plugged straight into the cisco over ethernet are 6 times higher). Latency is normal for wireless, just the speed is a bit too slow to the Internet. I haven't yet tried an internal network transfer over wireless > wired, the signal quality for wireless is "Excellent" at 54Mbps. Any ideas on rectifying this? Have I left something out on the Thomson that I need to do?
TIA

Are you testing the wifi right next to the thomson wifi AP?

Are you doing NAT on the thomson as well or are you just using it as a bridge?
(Is it plugged into the cisco via the thomsons WAN port or a LAN port?)

This is why you get seperate modems and routers.

Yes, I know that's why there are seperate modems and routers. This, however, is what I have. Merely asking for pointers that are useful other than "get a seperate modem and router".

Yes, it is bridged and right next to the box. Tried from my laptop using wifi and my tivo using wifi with the same results :/

Hrm.. the Thomson's WAN port? I didn't realise there was a specific one for WAN on the Thomson..

Oh, misread that. Guess the thomson is a DSL modem + router, never mind then!
What speeds do you get on the LAN? (say wired to wireless)

Sorry, yeah, it's the white modem/router with wifi
Speed on the local LAN between wired and wireless is as expected- around  5.5 - 6 MB/s

Perhaps it is just a dud

Try to experiment with some of the wireless settings (write down the original setting so you dont forget what was changed). If you have QOS on your thompson will probably slow down. Also you could try a different wireless channel and see if it improves.

Time to find a new industry!
