Hi folks,

We are looking at a block of land just north of Amberley - about 8 km north west. I checked with some ISPs and it seems they only use phone numbers to check for broadband availability. It's a vacant block of land with an address and phone to boundary only. Is there any way I can check for broadband availability before we consider the land any further?

Cheers,
D.

Try looking on http://www.broadbandmap.govt.nz/map/ as it will show other forms of broadband. For example Amuri covers the amberly area. However a note of caution, if it is a wireless broadband service you will need to check the property for obsticales such as tress or neighbours buildings.

Cheers,

Thanks - will check that out. No, we're not after wireless - just plain ole' wired ADSL(2?) :o)

Hi,

Without a house built on the land and an actual physical address, i.e. street number with street name, it might be hard to determine ADSL availability, you could probably use neighbor's address to check as an indication.

Your address would more than likely to be considered rural if you are looking at naked DSL with VoIP, which means price will be more expensive but if you are looking at POTS with DSL then it doesn't make a difference in pricing.

The block already has an address and Amberley is already considered "rural" by our ISP - I imagine this block will be just the same.

Behodar: Try http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps.

Thanks - that's very informative. According to that map the semi-rural address in Glasnevin is supplied by the same exchange as our house in the Amberley township. What's VDSL2 though? How does it differ from ADSL2?

VDSL2 is faster than ADSL2, particularly for uploads, but is not yet offered by many ISPs. There will most likely be additional costs involved, and it's unlikely that you'll be able to receive it from a rural location (it seems to be difficult enough when you're in a town!).

Not actually true, as most rural cabinets where upgraded later than urban cabinets most where upgraded to adsl 2 and vdsl 2 at the same time, my cabinet was the 3rd in Dunedin to be upgraded and i live out very rural in a town with <200 people.

But you would have to be very close to the cabinet for VDSL2 to be any faster than ADSL2+, it will still fall back to ADSL2 if it has to.

Time to find a new industry!

Hmm, I heard that you had to be within 900 m of the cabinet, and I'd guess that most rural users aren't due to the low population density.

Personally I'm in a town and it's unclear whether I'm able to get it.
