I know there's a few companies out there selling the uncapped data plans, I'm on WorldNet right now and it's pretty shoddy.

Moving house soon and wondering if anyone has better experiences with the other uncapped providers like Slingshot, NZNet or any other that I might not know about.

And yeah it has to be uncapped there will be 2 people working online from the house so we're talking 2-3gb per day used.

Cheers guys.

EDIT - oh here's a speedtest to show my worldnet speeds, not that it's worth much as the best speed we get here is about 1mbps for 99% of things.

What's 'shoddy'? (With your current provider)

Can you please explain in more detail? You tube at peak/off peak? windows update speed? Web page loading at peak/off peak? torrents if it applies to you?

Also, your speed test shows 6Mb/s. But you mention 1Mb/s?

Because if it shows 6MB/s and you get that most of the time, slingshot will not be a step up.

Sorry, I have not had any experience with NZnet but would be interested to hear what current NZNET customers think.

There are a few more players doing the uncapped thingee, but their plans are upwards of $500p/m.

Also, for those posts that are about to follow regarding hosting directs all you can eat, they no longer offer new connections (unless his business plan changes in the very long term).

Well in general it is just really bad. I can't comment too much about evening on peak because we have 4 computers sharing internet here so it gets slow understandably then.

During daytime hours a download from a file sharing site would be max 50kb/s

Download from a major site like microsoft/apple can reach 500kb/s (so the connection can run at about 5mbps but its only ever from these kinds of big companies websites)

Youtube is impossible at any time without pausing and letting the video load for a minute or ten.

Torrents run at about 10-20kb/s during daytime hours and occasionally 80kb/s overnight (if you're lucky).

Internet gaming is pretty bad at all times, about 200-300ms to any server overseas. But huge spikes come out of nowhere making games unplayable quite often.

All of the above comments apply to times when I'm the only person using the internet in the house.

2-3GB per day is only about 60-90GB per month.
there are plenty of full speed plans around that will do that for you without giving in to the uncapped slowdown

Sorry, think I'm doing my maths wrong! I meant about 10gb per day :)

Download from a major site like microsoft/apple can reach 500kb/s (so the connection can run at about 5mbps but its only ever from these kinds of big companies websites)

Alot of big sites like these use national Caches/CDNs, so while the website may be International by nature, the content you're downloading may actually be coming from a national source (ie Auckland).

Torrents run at about 10-20kb/s during daytime hours and occasionally 80kb/s overnight (if you're lucky).

Torrents are anyone's game, if you get decent speed from other sites; but terrible from torrents it's either seeders (or lack of), your internal network configuration (nat/port forward whatever it is) or your ISP is deliberately queing/shaping P2P traffic (for which they will have that all wrapped up in nice TnC's)

Internet gaming is pretty bad at all times, about 200-300ms to any server overseas. But huge spikes come out of nowhere making games unplayable quite often.

High ping overseas with games is inevitably. It's simply distance. I get 5ms to NZ servers; about 15-25ms to Aus servers, and about 150-180ms to States (West Coast) and more to East Coast. Depending on your service (DSL for example), 200ms is normal. A family member of mine just south of CHCH gets over 90-100ms to NZ game servers in Auckland - XNET). That means my latency to Australia is 3-4 times better than his to Auckland. And his is national.

As a note; if you've got a lot of people sharing the internet connection; your speed tests results will not be accurate. As I'm sure you're aware, you can only speedtest on available bandwidth on your connection. If someone is whoring the crap out of it; your speedtests results will suffer.

Once an hour (or 2 ) physically kick (unplug network cables (lol)) everyone off the net, and run a speedtest (always to the same location). Measure the results over a couple days. You may be surprised with the results.

Mate. Obviously you havent seen my ( & others ) posts here & on gpforums.

Worldnet is a bad ISP. Ive heard lots of bad things about them on here & from some businesses in chch that have used them for various connections.

I had a worse experience than you.

200-300ms to AU & more to overseas. Gaming impossible.

Ventrilo server in aus unusable. Messages would take 5 seconds to get to others & to get back to me.

MSN dcs constantly. You tube wouldnt even load.
Sharing internet browsing over 2 PCs would give webpage timeouts.

They lied to me & told me it was Telecoms fault & my local exchange had issues with it. I rang telecom & chorus who told me that the exchange was fine & there was no faults at all. They also gave me heaps of other excuses, saying my line was terrible, when I sync at FS ADSL1.

After twisting their arm a bit. They told me they dont buy bandwidth, they were lying to me about telecom & the system they use goes as follows:

1) Certain data is prioritised more than others.  EG p2p.
2) The more YOU download, the further down a Second, priority queue you ( your account ) goes = slower speed.

I was downloading off steam at 3 bytes per second, to AU servers.

I quit them and they decided to charge me another month even though we wernt connected with them & we were with slingshot....
