What do you mean?

It's a common misconception that DNS has to "refresh" (or "wait for the DNS to propogate" is always a favourite of mine to read hehe) but it's actually the device hosting the domain that sets the length of time the domain name is cached for.

So when you setup www.domain.comm, as part of the setting of that domain you set the amount of time you'll allow other DNS servers (i.e. your ISP's) to cache it, before checking back to make sure it's still valid.

Your ISP will cache www.domain.com for as long as it's been told it's allowed to (unless they force an override, or restart the DNS server etc)

Does that answer your question?

Big ISPs such has Telstra and Telecom break the ttl rules.

The common standard is 24 hours however there are other factors.

If we're talking about a .nz domain then there are other factors as well. I had to have my provider ring up the domain commisionor the other day to get one of mine redeligated properly. It was working over seas but not in NZ.

www.domainwhitepages.com is a good resource to see what's going on and help you to understand how it all works.

It sounds to me like you don't really understand how dns works. Please feel free to provide more detail about your problem and where you're at with your understanding of DNS. I know a bit and I feel your pain brother, I'm always happy to pass on what I know, as are others on this list.

Cheers Don

Sorry to thread hijack a little, but I'm curious as to what the problem was? The only thing I can think that would cause that would be some sort of network issue (ie a routing problem, or an access list blocking when it shouldn't be etc)

I don't recall exactly what the problem was caused by but yes, it was a fault issue and not a policy or regular thing.

Intergen's DRS people said it shouldn't take anymore than a day to come right anyway.  However, after Julie explained what the issue was I expressed I wanted her to contact the domain comminisor anyway and have them put it right.

It is my personal view that the government stepped in and created a new system with an additional layer of compleixity.  That is their right and choice.  However if they choose to do that for policy reasons then I expect that it run with the same or better fuctinoality than the previous system.  In this instance if failed.  That is not acceptable to me.

Excuse my rant, but the old system worked very well technically.  The new system has caused problems for me before.  What used to be a very simple process seems to have become complex and fault riden in my limited experience.

Cheers Don

Ps:  as for being a hijack...  I think your question and this issue is quite on topic.  It does help the orginal poster to get a better understanding of the issues.

Where does the government come into it? They have no authority over the administration of domain name registations in New Zealand, because the .nz registry and the office of the domain name commissioner are both managed by Internet NZ which is a non-profit organisation.

Have you contacted Xtra about that? In my experience, their DNS occassionally won't update at all unless they are actually told to do it manually. Sad, but true.

no I havn't contacted Xtra yet because the domain is served by discountdomains nameservers, I had them update the serial number in my zone file but XTRA will still not update their cache.

When I was with Xtra years ago, I had problem with their slow DNS update. I got frustrated and called few times and as you have guessed, they are reluctant to update.

Then I decided to change ISP, and they asked what the main reason I decided to switch ISP, I told them because their DNS servers are retarded and slow... sad but true.

And i'm never be with Xtra again in my life.

IMO, Xtra is like AOL...

it seems that this is a problem with alien and terminator nameservers (202.27.184.3 & .5)
the nameservers handed to my firewall via PPP(oA) function correctly.
