Roll out of ultra fast broadband underway in AucklandThe roll out of ultra fast broadband to more than 1.4 million Aucklanders got underway today as Chorus deployed the first fibre in the city under the government’s Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) initiative.

Steven Joyce, the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, says the UFB initiative is essential for continued growth in Auckland.
“Fibre with ultra fast capability will mean business people, innovators and entrepreneurs in our largest city can compete with anyone anywhere in the world. The barriers of distance and time will be almost completely removed by the UFB.”

Under the UFB initiative Chorus is contracted to Auckland and 23 other centres over the next eight and a half years. Fibre will be rolled out across Auckland, including Whenuapai, Long Bay, Swanson, Papuka and Drury. Deployment will cover a population of more than 1.4 millions as well as 24,200 business premises, more than 400 schools and more than 2,500 medical and other healthcare services. 17,500 Auckland premises will be covered in the first year.

"Ultra-fast broadband provides opportunities for businesses to work in new ways, schools to connect students to resources around the globe and for specialist medical expertise to be available in more places through technologies like high-definition video conferencing,” says Mr Joyce,

“Because we’re delivering fibre to the door, ultra-fast speeds will also be available at home, driving increased connectivity and access to new media and applications.

"The fibre-optic network will be open to retailers on equal terms, boosting market competition.

”Wholesale prices will be as low as half the price of current offerings for business services and residential customers will enjoy a vastly improved service for as much as they currently pay, or less,” says Mr Joyce.

Thanks for that; I knew that I was near the "border" so it's good to see that my street is included :)

Have you had a look at the price books available at http://www.crownfibre.govt.nz/publications-and-tenders/retail-service-providers.aspx ? It contains more detailed product descriptions and the price books for Chorus & Northpower/enable. The Ultrafast price books don't appear to be there.

Remember that doesn't include handover.

What is Hand over? (Is that like when the ISP makes money from you "hand over" fist? :))

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

But handover will be cheap as chips comparatively speaking if an ISP already has a POP in the fibre region.

Interesting that they are allowed to proceed without having sorted out splitting the company first.

When is that Telecom demerger shareholder meeting anyway?

What if the shareholders vote no!

Is it really even worth mentioning handover with UFB? $300 for a 10gbit handover make's it dam near irrelevant

I believe costs incurred will fall to Telecom.  It's been published somewhere but can't remember where.

But $1,355.00 for the 10Gbps link from the POI to your data centre, although you could put your own hardware on dark fibre...

Ha,

Still cheaper than what you could get today and yes, The only reason I can think of for buying that product is shifting responsibility to Chorus from your own tech's. $700/mth for DF means 1gbit/10gbit/even 40gbit or 100gbit if you have the pockets.

That's if you even need the link with Chorus, Up north with NorthPower your NNI is delivered to you where you want it inside the coverage zone, 10gbit NNI for $300/mth delivered in your DC

And also depend on whether you have colocation at the point of interconnect; would be way cheaper to buy a few layer 2 services than pay for a footprint to power up your own -48VDC gear.

Looking at that map, it's obvious that Chorus is fairly uninterested in getting Fibre to the Home. Every one of their Year 1 targets is either Industrial, Commercial, or Upper Class housing. I would have liked to see them at least make a token effort to include a neighbourhood inhabited by average people. Or at the least including their existing fibre network in the year 1 targets (which they haven't) - I realise there is a cost involved in rolling UFB out to the existing network, but surely compared to lighting up new cable that's a "quick win"?
