Hi there

I am wanting to be ready for when Fibre is available but also improve my homes current wiring.
I am with Vodafone. When I am only using 1 Ethernet connection, I get 17mb download, nd 1mb upload speeds.
But when I use two or more Ethernet connections (PS3 , PC) i only get 5mb download & 0.4mb upload speed.
I use a 10 or 15m phone line extension.
The connection would lag when I was in my room, so I moved out into the lounge to use another Jack and it gave me the 17mb d/l 1mb u/l speed. The speeds would go down when using more than 1 and the connection would disconnect then start reconnecting again every time I plugged a ethernet device in/out. So I used the previous jack in the room and gave me the same faster speed.

So I am wanting to get my house wiring done.
I was wondering do the connections speed decrease as you use them more, b/c unused active jacks tend to provide the faster speed after a while without using it.
Also, can I get star wiring with my current copper connection ? And will the speeds be any slower by having active unused RJ45 ports.

I am wanting to get that Service Delivery Point installed, with the star wiring , to have RJ45 connections ready in the wall to plug easily into. And to be able to easily switch over from copper to fibre.

Hi, plugging in ethernet connections should not effect DSL line speed, they are not connected. If however the 2ne device you plug in for some reason starts pulling a system update or other download then naturally you have two devices sharing a connection the speed may drop for awhile.

How are you measuring your speeds, from the modem stats page or are they speedtest speeds.

You seem to be mixing and matching terms relating to phone and lan/ethernet circuits, that leaves me a littel confused.

Can you post your line stats, and explain more about what current sockets etc exist. I would not bother with a SDP, just get a master filter installed and some new cat5e or cat6 data and phone runs made.

I only have phone jacks atm. Am wanting RJ45 ports available in the wall for easy access. So how am I able to get that done?
Does a master filter provide that ?
And who can I contact to get Cat5e/Cat6 wired through my house ?

Hi, so the comments you made regarding speed changing with ethernet ports connecting or not is misleading.

What does you modem stats tell you about the connection, ie line speed, attenuation etc. You current phone sockets per sey dont need to change for phone services, but by adding a master filter and adding a new socket (with dedicated cat5e/6 feed) specifically for the modem to connect to is what you requrie. If you also add cat5e/6 ethernet runs so you can connect other PCs etc to teh modem is good.

Any commercial electrician outfit will be able to wire the house up for ethernet, even running extra things like audio/video through them in some cases where needed. I helped a mate cable his house with CAT6 and gigabit ethernet to 6-7 different rooms. It was a piece of cake.

Getting it done professionally is no big deal, still going to cost plenty though.

Ok thanks I will look into that. Is Chorus able to do it? And how much do you estimate it to cost?

Chorus don't do your internal phone/lan jackpoints unless you want to just have phone outlets only. You need a cabling guy to do the star wiring properly.

What do you mean by the "jack in the room", and what did you plug into it? You have been moving the modem around to different jackpoints? If your modem cant handle the same throughput when you plug in a second device, then either the modem is dying or your other device is downloading as well (more likely). Its also possible that you plugged something into a jack that was creating interferance for the ADSL, because you didn't say what was connected to each jack at the same time.

Time to find a new industry!
