I'm new to NZ from the UK and have just rented a place in Murrays Bay, North Shore, Auckland.

I'm looking for an ISP for a fast DSL/VoIP and am close to the ADSL2 exchange BSY/Exchange.

The thing is i'll be needing to upload and download fairly hefty files from the UK as I am still doing a bit of work for my former employer.  Obviously server latency to the UK will be a bit shocking, but I was wondering if the different ISP's have different routing to the wider web or dedicated pipes out, any of which would affect the speed at which I can upload and download.

i don't really know any of the ISP's over here (except Vodafone - and I'm not sure about their fixed networks) and have spent the afternoon in a state of investigative confusion.

From my limited knowledge, I was looking at Orcon, Xnet, & Telecom (non VoIP).  Recommendations would be gratefully received...

Xnet and telecom are good, used both, and don't think you can go wrong with either.

If you're wanting to upload a lot of data you'll probably want to look at VDSL2 as you'll get 10Mbps upstream - www.telecomwhole.co.nz/maps will give you a pretty good indication if you're within the coverage footprint. Unfortunately none of the ISP's above yet offer retail VDSL products.

Thanks sbiddle, I already checked the map and there's no VDSL coverage.. :(

I would go with Telecom their Total Home pricing is very competitive currently.  My reasoning is their scale and wider customer demographics mean there is much less chance of congestion (especially at peak time) compared the other ISP's you mention there who tend to attract younger heavier users.

Orcon is having massive customer service issues recently and has pretty patchy performance over time (see various previous threads about them here on geek zone).

Xnet is currently quite expensive for larger data usage amounts when compared to other ISP's plans.
