Not related to Alcatel-Lucent, but here is a demo of one of our guys splicing some fibre optic cable using a machine similar to one in pics:

Don't judge us on our video production skillz! We didn't go to film school!

Brings back memories. Basically the same gear, but the Fusion Splicer is a tad smaller than ~20 years ago. The monitor on the splicer seems larger though! The alignment stage was a more manual process with the older gear. Pretty sure the FISTs haven't change either!
