Hi guys,
i am planning on getting VDSL2 installed at our property when our cabinet goes live in the next few weeks.
It is interesting reading through the VDSL threads on the experience people have had.

Currently have been looking at a few ISP's that offer VDSL2 but still haven't decided who to go with. Snap maybe??

My main concerns are after sales support. If i wanted to get the VDSL2 Profile changed how easy would this be?

Choosing a modem is another thing, looking for a modem with enough features and settings and that i can play around with the Telnet to change the Training SNRM on the connection.
I have had the line checked out and reported a 2dB attenuation so all is clear hopefully for VDSL2 to be provisioned.

I welcome any 1 with a VDSL connection to post up their results and experience, changing VDSL2 profiles etc.

Thanks guys

You can't just go hacking with VDSL2 settings or change your profile. Everybody is on 8b with the exception of some trial users who are very close and using 17a.

VDSL has a lot of self optimisation stuff that goes on in the background.

Yea which is fair enough. yea i am not sure much can be changed if DLM is doing its things.

So 8b shouldn't be a problem and if the connection is hitting the 50mb/s limit with still a good amount of headroom ill most likely put a request in for 17a. See how close i can get to the 70/10 cap that wholesale setup.

The official word for 17a:

"The 997E17a spectrum profile will only be used for End Users on short loops (an attenuation level corresponding to about 200 m or less) and will be activated by Telecom Wholesale only where this will optimise the end user experience."

Presumably there's a set dB figure that you need to be below before Telecom will consider 17a but I don't know what that figure is.

Oh cool thanks for that. According to Telecoms system i have a 175m line from the cabinet.
Will most likely find out if i am eligible after VDSL is installed.

Yea, going to give them a call on Monday.

Been looking around but can't find out how long it will take for the cabinet to go live. Chorus spreadsheet state 16/11/2011 but the cabinet went into the ground on Wednesday and chorus vans are around it with umbrella's and stuff.

Was pretty interesting, had a look at what they are doing and noticed the big backup battery system under the ground.

they don't always load the vdsl profiles onto new cabinets. i had a cabinet install down the road and it wasn't put on . if that is the case your isp has to request it to be added . but hopefully it is loaded ready to go from day 1

Hi. I've been looking on the Telecom Wholesale Map for Hastings, and currently St. Leoanrds doesn't have a cabinet rather all connections go directly to the Hastings Phone Exchange. Interestingly many areas around my street have VDSL cabinets. Is there anyway to check when my street / area will be changed over to a cabinet ?

If you're not listed as being cabinetised you won't be. Customers within the coverage footprint of the exchange will always stay on this.

Just 2 more weeks togo :D

Chorus spreadsheet states that our cabinet will be completed on the 16th November.

Any idea how long after the upgrade we can apply for service? Also just rang Telecom and they say the 31st December.. really??

December is quite possible, that spreadsheet is just a guide from my experiences.

Is there a reason you want VDSL2? I have VDSL2, and I enjoy it for the extra upload bandwidth, but as far as downloading goes, that speed is kind of the same.

I have found that most of the time, it is not your connection limiting your experience, but the hosting site or ISP bandwidth/throttles etc.

Compared to ADSL2+: (the downloading aspect only)
My speed from microsoft technet is still around 300-800KB/s,
Google (mail/docs/etc) is about the same -300-800KB/s
Youtube HD is the same (except you have more than 1 computer stream youtube HD simultaneously.)
Web pages load the same

From my experiences, I feel that the curent TCP system is crap at handling big loads over a single TCP connection when high latency is involved (150ms+). BUT

One of the only differences I notice is when using a download accelerator. This downloads a file by breaking it into pieces then downloading up to 30 of those pieces simultaneously. This accelerates the speed upwards of 4MB/s. Which consequently is roughly about the same speed as my old system where I had 2 ADSL2+ lines bonded together.

Anyway, just thought I would share my experiences so far with a 45000Kbps/10000Kbps VDSL2+ connection.

Wanting VDSL because we operate a business from home and we have 6 people living here. Ill also be gaming.

Have looked into the Fritz Box VDSL modem and it seems pretty good so going to get that arranged.

Any luck with the 17a profile?

Our cabinet is scheduled for today and by the looks of it they are busy migrating customer lines at the moment.

Just have to wait for the BB waiters team to process our order. Not sure how long that will take.
