I have just returned home to do some quick downloads and check email, Bloody ihug must have NO international bandwidth now, I'm getting 2 kbps, yess, 14.4 dial up speed, though all nz sites are fast, The worst part is is's intermittent and basically been getting worse over the last few weeks, Gmail is at some hideous CRAWL!

I phoned the helpline pressed 3 for tech support and got instantly cut off so their chance is gone... Tim to move on, I'd been with them since 1996(7)

Too many problems of recent including email servers going down.

Who offers a high quality connection connection regardless of price and does not push their crappy tolls on me (i have italk VoIP)

I only need minimal data but need it to WORK! even streaming 128k streaming radio breaks up and stutters on ihug to the terrible jitter, I can STREAM IT ON MY HARRIER WITH NO BUFFERING! so islug are pretty sh1te.

I think eveyone offers a $10 discount if you have tolls with them. Im with xtra and happy with the service. I always get at least 3.4Mbps and apart from an outage a few months back their service is good. Helpdesk can have waits sometimes but they usually know what they are talking about, always get a straight answer.

My recommendations are Orcon, Slingshot and Xtra - in that order.

I've also heard many good things about Xnet, although I can't say what they're really like because I've never been with them.

If you'd like to have free churning, Slingshot, Xtra and Xnet are the way to go. They're all free, with no contract. But if you join Xtra, you also get a free modem with it. But if you do not like to have tolls with your ISP, then I think Xnet is your best bet.

I just signed up for Slingshot less than a month ago, and I personally think they're pretty good. Plus, if you have join them, your Italk bandwidth do not count towards your monthly cap - not that it matters anyway, because excess data is cheap on Slingshot $5 for 3GB, $10 for 10GB, $25 for 30GB or $40 for 50GB. :)

They have really good international speeds too.

Think it really comes down to what dslam your on and how much capacity it has when your talking about ISP speed. I'm using ihug at home on a 2mb connection (using a dlink DSL-502T router) in the wainuiomata area (lower hutt) and most sites that had high bandwidth to them, I could download easily at around 250k/sec. Even using the speed test on www.nzdsl.co.nz I can usually always rate it at 1.9mb on that site.
In contrast I was reinstalling a friend's PC who lives about 4 blocks from me during the weekend, she has 3.5mb Xtra yet when I did a speed test on her machine it would not go any faster than 1mb, and this was in the middle of the day also (Modem was def connected fast enough to get 3.5mb). I would suggest talking to neighbours if they have DSL to see what kind of performance they are getting before changing ISP, if all saying its slow then its just a case of Telecom not providing enough backhaul capacity.

I can't say enough good things about Xnet (WorldXChange)

I am still amazed, they have a FireFox plugin that gives you a nice little usage graph in the bottom of your browser, or a standard Windows binary to monitor it.

Not only that, they offer uncapped Domestic traffic and their International links aren't saturated.

I don't work for them, but I have friends who do and I know how smart they are. It's always good to know smart people are running the ISP :)
