At work we have a 50 megabit connection up and down.
I know International speeds will always be slower then local but this is a big drop.
Or is this normal for a business plan?

I would expect it to be somewhat better due to the steep price hick businesses have to pay.

International:

Put it this way, we have a 1gbps national connection with unlimited traffic for probably around $300 a month yet 10mbps of international costs $1000 a month. The cost differential doesn't really work like that for the provider but that's how they choose to sell it.

Also remember international has far higher latency so thanks to TCP a single connection will never be as fast.

Whether those are slow or not depends entirely on what you're paying for. You also need to factor in TCP limitations, particularly to the UK.

Fire up a torrent of your favorite linux dist - DVD image is best and watch it ramp up.

There are a number of factors that would slow you down like TCP throttling, how you get to the speedtest host, Overloading of said host (it's happened and more than you think). Also remove any and all networking gear from the setup and plug directly into the connection with as minimal gear needed and test.

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

We have full 50 megabits for both Int and Nat data, it's just that Nat is capped.

But yeah could be just the TCP limit as using multiple connections does bring it right up to 50 megabits.

Even taking into account International links, something is wrong with a drop like that.

Query your ISP. Perhaps take some trace routers.

Download VisualRoute evaluation and have a look at sites.

See what other speedtest servers come back with?

"full 50 megabits for both Int and Nat" means you are paying for 100% CIR on the international? I doubt that very much unless you are related to mister dotcom (run for your life!). The 50Mbit/s applies to your link to the ISP and is expensive enough already, and then there is some value factored in for national IP transit and whatever international is allocated. Even then 100% CIR on international will support several TCP streams better than a download test on single PC because buffers and receive windows are generally configured for low latency. If all the machines in your office downloaded at the same time from different servers then you might get a reasonable aggregated measure of international throughput.

Time to find a new industry!

Install uTorrent, visit Vodo and download The Yes Men Fix the World...

Before starting the download, make sure you configure uTorrent to no limit in connections and configure upload and download speeds to max. Remember speeds are in kB/s (kilobytes per second), so if you have 50 Mb/s (megabits per second) then you should put max around 6250 kB/s...

With more than 600 seeds you wait a few minutes and see how long it takes to use it all up.

In my tests I usually select 25 of those movies, download each .torrent file but do not start the torrent. Once they are all ready to go I select all in uTorrent, right-click and start. This will flood your connection and you will see how much you can really do with that...

And yes, Vodo.net is a legal source of movies.

Done some tests and seems our Int traffic is about half our Nat.
But this was using multiple connections.

National: 6.9 MB/s
International: 3.3 MB/s

Single connections are still way to slow... Thinking about switching ISPs.

Thanks for your help

Single connections over TCP will be a lot slower than most people think if they are to the other side of the world.

Lol if you have a 50mbps connection it's not as simple usually as switching ISP as you will be in contract. And the installation cost will likely be quite high for a new ISPs service, even if its the same fibre carrier as it will be provisioned as a new connection.

I doubt very much you have 50mbps CIR international unless your paying like $10k a month for your internet connection......

Maybe changing isp's could be an option after you've called up your current one and complained :P

even then that's 50 megabit of international transit, not 50 megabit  to one destination.

Using that wand site..

http://wand.net.nz/~perry/max_download.php?rtt=150&wsize=262144&no_delayed_acks=2&mss=1452&ploss=0.9&bits_per_second=50000000&ack_size=40

If you have 0.9% packet loss you could expect to see that kind of performance.

Business connections are not provisioning like your residential DSL connection, on business data connections you typically pay for national and international separately, and each typically has a different speed provisioned.

Fringe will have a 100mbps UNI, with 50Mbps of national data + ~10% burst, and most likely 1Mbps international + some burst.

fringe:

Based on the above assumptions yes it is normal. I strongly suggest you contact whoever manages your internet connection at work and ask them what they are actually purchasing.
