Ultrafast Fibre have been busy digging holes all down my street for the last few days. While I look forward to the faster broadband to come (optimistically assuming it's even affordable), it is unfortunate that they managed to break our trusty old copper cable in the process, ironically leaving us no phones or internets at all. And it will take another couple of days to fix! Not to mention the piles of dirt and plastic barriers everywhere... feels very third world.

Funny. I guess.

Basically the maps/plans for where stuff is underground are so poor that trenching and drilling for UFB will inevitably hit other services that weren't on the maps and weren't supposed to be there.

You can expect a lot of this happening.

There is a HUGE amount of this going on, with water being the most commonly hit. I know the people in Kelson have faced huge dramas, and in Porirua a gas main was hit a few days ago resulting in a evacuations and half a dozen fire engines spending a few hours hanging around.

We just had a simlar thing recently in Hawkes Bay, Unison cut 1600 pairs when drilling a couple of weeks ago.

I understand most of the old Chorus maps are hand drawn and out of place in streets from the exact placement on the maps but I would've thought they would have somewhat of an idea where major cables are when drilling.
