I live in the country, about 6 k from the main exchange in town. So no connectivity because of distance. I've been trying to get BB here for quite a few years. There is a box at the end of our road, which a Tel techie guy from transfield I think, told me would take a miniDSLAM or sommat like it. However trying to get Telcos to do this has been an ongoing battle. Helpdesk people are generally useless and are obviously told to just brickwall it. I call once a year or so to try again. I've even offered to pay to get it installed. Brickwall again. Yesterday I attempted it once again... and got the whole stonewall treatment over again. The helpdesk person after a long pause came back and said she had found the solution and proceeded to give me Farmsides 0800 number. I hung up in frustration.

Does anyone know a way I can get to people who can make these sort of decisions. Anyone had similar problems and what solutions worked. I'd prefer not to use satellite simply because of latency.

The really frustrating thing is that I have FXNet's fibre running right past my front gate! :(

Hi, you have probably heard of the RBI this is a guvment funded expansion of the Rural Broadband network and comes in various forms, but the primary expansion is via Chorus fibre being taken further into the country side primarily to get to schools and connect them with fibre, however where it makes sense Chorus are connecting more cabinets with DSLAMs in them, and also via Vodafone add cell towers to provide both voice and 3G data services, and ultimately 4G.

Depending on your location the RBI may provide a solution for you.

As for "fibre running past your gate" this means very little. You unfortunately can't just tap into a fibre cable and instantly have service.

PM me your details if you want and I'm sure we can find you a WISP, they're covering an ever expanding proportion of the country and from what I've seen or RBI so far, they're a better choice.

Where abouts are you? There is a very high likelihood there is a wireless ISP in your area who can provide you with service and probably could have starting many years ago.

I'm just north of Tokoroa, nowhere near a school unfortunately. (i'd provide a goole maps link but it would take about an hour on this dialup) The cabinet deployment has one entry for Tokoroa :(

Mobile BB is a no go, cell reception sux. Tried using a Vodem for a while. Expensive and flaky to nonexistent connection at home so could only use it on my laptop.

I talked to the Chorus guys and they told me that they need to get a job request from an ISP before they can do anything about it.

Have you tried with a decent external aerial, or is that just with a USB stick?

Odds are you'll be covered by the wireless RBI deployment. The Vodafone website lists the coverage areas.

And because the hardware is properly installed you'll get far better results than a USB stick.

LOL, I know that. I talked to FXNet and they said that If I wanted to set up as an ISP they would sort it for a cost of around 10k IIRC, I seriously considered it. There is a join where a reel finished and another started just up the road and I could have set up something there for around 6K, unfortunately the power was on the wrong side of the road. We considered solar but then the cost spiralled.

You can check your address and see if you have mobile cell sites nearby here.

If you have tried a vodem, I suggest you try a Telecom Sierra Wireless USB, or even better a Telecom 3G router. This way you can position it anywhere around your property to get the better reception and connect your PC via WiFi.

Mobile broadband is clearly your best option right now, you really just need to spend a few hundred $ on proper hardware and externally mounted aerial to make this work.

Yes, but RBI is being rolled out, probably a long wait time for services to be available. Depending where the OP lives, look at the map link I posted and there may be some good Telecom coverage.

We did have a WISP here, Tok was one of the first to have it, but politics and mismanagement gutted it and it was disposed of in a fire sale to Borg WiFi. I talked to him a couple of years ago and at that point he was at capacity and wasn't taking any more connections. The other difficulty was that I'm not within eyesight of Colsons hill where his gear was set up so it would have been a bit of a palaver in any case. Also back at that time, Telecom were saying "Next year sometime.."(got that for a number of years), so I wasn't willing to go to the trouble overcome that particular issue. Since then they have pulled out all together.
We do have an issue in that we're in a valley but I could sort that, I have enough ground for a pretty high aerial.

6km is not the limit for getting DSL on, anyone that tells you that is lieing as I had ours checked by Orcon and it's 7.5km from the exchange. I get 2Mbps down/0.6Mbps up. We had to push for three months to get it put on but we did get it in the end. I'm with Vodafone. Your mileage may vary.
