Curious to see how many of you use/have tried it and if you noticed any performance increase.

DNS Server IPs: 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4

No. In this part of the world it will cause so many issues and break so many things it should only be used if you fully understand the consequences.

You should use the DNS provided by your ISP. Using an external DNS will cause grief to most access in New Zealand.

Upset or cause grief how?

Been using it most of the afternoon and havent run into any issues... any diagnostics/tests I should check/do?

It will slow your internet down. Anything from a google or akamai or alike cache that your ISP has will come from overseas and make your internet seem a lot slower and your internet experience will not be so good.

If a larger amount of people use these overseas DNS servers then the ISP overall will use more bandwidth not from the cache and it will cost the ISP more money than it would if you did use the ISP cache.

Fair point, it seems to have gone to crap since before, actually having to buffer 360p youtube...

That's because if your ISP has a Google cache in their network then their DNS knows about it and will point to the correct servers. Google DNS (and OpenDNS, and DynDNS, and Symantec Norton DNS) don't know and will just point to a generic IP, most likely in the US. And everything else that rely on a CDN will go to custard.

At least googles DNS passes through DNSSEC records.. XNet doesn't!

Sadly I haven't found a way of being able to use XNets akamai/local caches while still being able to validate DNSSEC records. (Let alone get them passed through even without the AD bit)

i use google dns in tandem with isp dns. using dnsmasq and "--all-servers" option which sends to multiple servers at once, and takes the first answer it gets.

i find it mostly helps on far away domains with short ttls. and most of the time on popular content it's slower. but when it's in sync it's fine.

i don't seem to have problems with akamai/google going to the wrong place.

i started using it only after it routed to australia.
