This subject may have been covered elsewhere  -if so I apologise.
Looking to install a Master ADSL filter (XDSL).
Easiest place is outside in the Telecom entry point box (if it will fit).
This has a capacitor across the IC line, I assume for line testing, but my first jack point inside also a cap. installed (on what will become a phone only jack - all 2 wire connections). Can (should) I remove one or other or both of these caps.

Also, its quite a distance from the ETP to the first jack point and ADSL connection - should I look at moving the Master filter closer to the modem.

Appreciate any help.

Is there a Chorus web site for all this crap?

These same questions come up all the time, as the owner of the network, do others think it sensible they publish this sort of information?

Outside in the ETP is probably the best place, that way it is isolating any potentially problematic wiring inside the building. Then run a decent twisted pair (cat5e etc.) from the filter to your modem outlet.

Is it definitely a capacitor across the line (picture?). Sometimes there will be a line terminator of some description on unused lines for testing - could that be it?

Are there any markings on your current jackpoint (i.e. 2, M, S etc.)? Just trying to determine if the jackpoint itself is 2 wire.

I know this comment will be seen as controversial and the OP won't agree with me, but IMHO if you have to ask questions about phone wiring when making changes you really shouldn't be touching it.

I know making changes to phone wiring is legal in NZ, but it's the cause of endless issues when performed by people who don't understand what they're doing.

+1,000,000 for sbiddle's comment.

That yellow (or sometimes grey) thing in the etp is a test terminator and is just a 10k resistor. It doesn't have to be there. It only helps with the automated NTS tests.

Any old jackpoint will work whether it is the old master jacks so a cheap chinese like we have today. Wire up the center pins and it will work. Dont bother removing components from the jacks.

Splitter is best in the ETP.

Are you in auckland? PM coffeebaron. He will sort you out.

Rubbish.

Asking questions is good.  Giving it a go yourself is also good!  It's very good!

If you do have a go, I totally agree with Steve, you do run the risk that you may need to call in a professional to sort it out for you and you can create that person more work, not less, if you have a go yourself.

However, in most cases you can create a good outcome if you do enough research.

Also, if you're not confident, but have researched where everything is properly, then you can same a professional some time when they do come to visit because you can tell them where the cable comes in, where it runs and what you already know about the site.

So there are pros and cons on both sides.

D

Thanks sbiddle for your reply.
The reason I asked is so there wont be "endless issues ...", as you put it.

The whole idea of a forum is for people who dont know to interact with people who do - none of this would exist otherwise - I see you spend countless hours tapping keys - you would need to find some other constructive ways to spend your time.

I dont really understand your "endless issues" comment - its legal, not dangerous and can only affect my household should I get it wrong - what was the point of your post.

Thanks to the others...
