Hi, our street is at the moment undergoing UFB I think....  the deals are more/less on par with ADSL2 pricing.

While I am away, they are not IT literate, how much of an issue is this and do ISPs/Telecom  send out officials?  Because they won't know how to configure the router.  They just use the phone and we use the internet when we are at home.

If it is better to go with a traditional phoneline do we need to install an extra line?

Cheers.

If you go with a managed service like Orcon Genius or even WxC VFX then the user has a far smaller part to play in the setup. My parents have had VFX for probably three years now and when they have had modem/router issues during the day the guys at Xnet have been able to get them going without a problem.

If you went with say 2talk where there is a little more user config involved it could get hard for some to get it going again should something go wrong.

If you do go down the VoIP road, make the people aware that during a power outage, their phone line will go down (unless you put in a UPS) - they'll have to use a cellphone until power returns.

There are no retail UFB connections at present and won't be for several months yet.

As for your issues I don't really understand your post but an installation requires a technician to visit as they will need to do the fibre leadin to your house, install the ONT, organise an electrician for power if necessary, and change/rewire your phone wiring to integrate into the ONT or router for voice services.

There should be no need to even know what VoIP means, as the voice services and technology behind it should be completely transparent to the end user. Any RSP/ISP who doesn't go down a full autoprovisioning model is going to face serious support issues - just look at the problems face now with people who switch to Slingshot and have no idea how to configure iTalk.
