Hi there, im currently on a 40gb plan (i dont think you can say the ip) and its kind of slow. it used to be fast on 10 gb, then they rang and asked if we wanted to upgrade to 20gb for 4 dollars a month and then we got for free another 20 gb and it slowed down. for example, playing battlefield 2 modification project reality on an australian server, i used to get around 50-60 ms ping, when i upgraded from 10-20gb it went up to 120 ms, also i used to get 4 bars internet in cod-mw2 now i usually get 3 and barely ever get 4. which isnt that great since i mainly use the internet for gaming.
i live in christchurch

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me:
a good isp that has fast speeds,
and is also bundled with phone
and about 20gigs a month with a cap at the end so i dont get a $1000 bill if i go over
( or no cap but no extra pricing)
I have to sell this idea to my parents.

i have heard good things about orcon and snap (isp award or something)
thank you all,

I'm sure you are allowed to mention which ISP you are with as long as you are factual and not abusive. However, before you blame the ISP you might want to consider other factors. Could your ADSL router be a factor, what about house wiring/line filters?

If you are on a LLU connection, then if there are new Chorus ADSL cabinets in the area, you could be suffering from cross talk.
Or are you already connected via Chorus equipment?

Perhaps you could post your modem stats on here.

E.g. SNR (noise margin) Up/Down
Attenuation  (dB) Up/Down
Output Power (dBm) Up/Down
Rate (kbps) Up/Down

You mention ping times were bad, but is this to all sites, or just some?

Oh, by the way this appears to be you first post, so welcome to geekzone.

I see you mentioned Internet bars, and since I don't play MW2, I'm not sure whether this is an in-game feature that measures your ping or some other statistic.  In case you are referring to your wireless signal, I would recommend for best effect to game while plugged in to the modem with an ethernet cable.  If you find you have reduced wireless signal, try changing the wireless channel and/or bandwidth as you may be getting interference from some other wireless signal.

What ISP are you on?

It's possible with the plan change your line profile defaulted back to interleaving on, instead of off.

Can you login to your modem/routers admin ui web page and check the line/dsl status page?  Look for ADSL Mode: Interleaved OR Fast, or Interleaving Depth.

To get interleaving off again it's usually just a matter of contacting the helpdesk and asking for them to action turning it off.

thank you for the welcome! okay sweet, my isp is telecom,

StatisticsDownstreamUpstreamLine Rate16011 Kbps1199 KbpsAttainable Line Rate20236 Kbps1240 KbpsNoise Margin11.1 dB12.6 dBLine Attenuation7.0 dB3.1 dBOutput Power0.0 dBm12.8 dBm

The bars in Mw2 measure ping, (e.g 4 bars would be 10-70) 3 bars (70-200)

it seems to be in most, in Call of duty black ops, every server is over 100ms now, it used to be 70 ms before.

Browsing youtube and stuff are fine though, they load quick enough.
We are on adsl2, apparently some people in our location have fibre i heard from my brother, we arent on chorus stuff though, so maybe it might be that crosstalk thing, timing just seemed weird and how all the pings went up.

Also Wreck thank you for your input, All of the computers are wireless and i only plug the ps3 in with ethernet for speed, as my main computer just had its 9800gt fried and now doesnt turn on (cpu fan doesnt spin when i turn it on so could be emergency shuttoff idk)
By the way if you guys are into arma and stuff you should check out the project reality battlefield 2 mod!

Ill take a screenshot but i cant figure out how to compress it to 200kb to show you guys of my router page, and what to click, on line mode it just says adsl2+ and it says line coding trellis on.

also heres my ADSL Settings

  Enable ADSL PortSelect the support of line modes: G.dmt G.lite T1.413  ADSL2 READSL2 ADSL2+  Annex M
Capability Enabled: Bit Swapping Seamless Rate Adaptation
hopefully you guys can see the ticks, i may ring up telecom and ask if i go down a couple of gigabytes if my speed will go back up, idk.

damn those graphs didnt turn out well, my router is a dynalink 1025w, its wireless and ethernet. the computer i played mw2 and project reality on was plugged in with its ethernet.
My main concern is fast ping in games. Im not sure if ping and speed are the same thing, i think ping is how fast the internet gets around and back and the speed is how much you can download back att once.

Games are priority :)

TelstraClear cable if you can get it is pretty good for gaming.. Otherwise Telecom is actually pretty good on ADSL for gaming..

It sounds like interleaving to me, ring Telecom's broadband help desk and ask for interleaving to be turned off.

I would second Ragnor's suggestion. Changing ISP isn't likely to result in a difference.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

It's a form of low level error correction that is good for bad lines, however it adds latency.

Getting it turned off should decrease your ping in game back to how it was before your plan change to newer larger data cap.

If you have any stability problems with it off on your line, you can always get them to turn it back on.

I really like telecom for gaming. They have up to 15Mbit/s speeds which is good.

Downloading games from steam servers normally reach 1MB/s.

Depending on where the servers your gaming on are you may get high or low FPS.
